Could we do something about the Google Ads for Contributers to DU
First off, I'm all for anything that provides additional monies to DU to help keep it up and running including the Google ads plus I also know we're in a testing phase of where to put the ads.

Perhaps for those of who who are contributors or even limiting it to those who are on monthly subscription plans (which I'm not but it would be a good incentive) that we would see less of the google ads.

1. We could follow Slashdot and do subscriptions.
(I was going to save my 799th post for something else but here goes anyway...)

Slashdot has adverts, but if you pay $5, for your next 1000 page views you can be advert-free.

I don't know how it would work out here, but Lynne has a point. For some people adverts are irritating. Others poke up with them, and there are even some people who actually follow adverts for fun (like in the same way I followed at one time buses, and a specific bus fleet with routes for a time).

A pay-per-view scheme would be fair to people: the people who use DU more would pay more if they want to see no adverts. The casual visitor would see DU with adverts, and the committed (but not on DU every waking minute) visitor would probably not see adverts for a long time.

Anyway, just my 2 copper coins...

Mark.

I'll add the on edit if I can find the thread.

Edit: Thread must have disappeared, but I'm reasonably sure I wasn't hallucinating it. You can always PM your concerns to the admins.

6. Are you talking about those four little ads above your first post?
They don't bother me at all.

7. I pay for ad free salon and would be willing to pay
for ad free DU. I'd not want to pay as much as I do for salon (they give a bunch of free subscriptions with premium membership) but maybe half of what salon charges might be fair.

12. Agreed, DU must be open for all.
Adverts can be one way to go but hey, I like the ./ and Salon models too - you take your pick and you pays your choice.

10. Do more fundraisers and DITCH those ads.
Gawd, I loathe these things.

If money is THAT tight then do fundraisers more often, or sell a few kidneys/livers, but PLEASE do not put these BS ads on DU. They slow down load time and they are buggy--they hang up sometimes.

This seriously sucks and might actually be the one thing that could make me consider leaving DU.
