6. EggZackly. I've wondered the same damn thing for years.
I'm serious.
I have a good friend who didn't finish high school.
He is a proudly self-proclaimed Redneck with a capitol "R".
I know education doesn't = I.Q., but his is probably average at best.
He's a really nice, very generous guy and he is rolling in dough.
He does disaster cleanup.
Think Katrina.

If I'm so goddamn smart, how come I'm not rich?

8. You got that right. I have two friends who are at least as smart as me if
not even more, and they're both construction workers. We're all in our fifties now, and they both are all broken down from the physical labor.

(I'm broken down physically, too, but it's because of other circumstances, not from having swung a hammer for 35 years.)

I think I got the book smarts kind.
I know a little bit about a lotta stuff.
I'm very popular at cocktail parties.
It doesn't pay a lot.

19. Well, we all three of us have the book smarts, but I was the only one
who decided to make a living with his brains instead of his back.

Or with his head instead of his hands, if that works better.

Of course, having been horribly injured at 19 made that decision pretty easy for me.

64. being smart usually means you know alot about the past
or can solve defined problems. Getting rich requires being able to guess the future - is this a good investment, a good career path, etc? And it is also an open-ended undefined problem.

But, in spite of my user-name, I never thought I was smart. I read more and studied more than my classmates, and cared more about school and learning. Clearly, having such a passion for knowledge is not "smart", since there is not a direct financial reward for it. In the same way, I followed my intellectual interests in college, rather than thinking about and planning for a remunerative career. A good job was supposed to be a sure thing for a person with a degree anyway. That was the myth I believed, and I did, in fact, get one good paying job with DoD, but I quit that, voluntarily jumping off the good job train, and then found myself unable to get back on it.

106. why aren't you rich?
simple answer really.

either you aren't as smart as you think you are, or you are that smart, and you don't want to be rich. You want to do other things (unless of course you are in an occupation where you should already be rich, and aren't) Why become a college professor, instead of a bond trader? Why did I go to what my friends affectionally like to call 'tree-hugging school' instead of getting an MBA? If I had the MBA, why would I be in the non-profit world instead of the corporate one?

face it, amigo, at some point, you CHOSE not to be rich.

15. One thing I have noticed
A hell of a lot more people will claim they have a high IQ and it usually also surpasses the percentage that have an above average, typically people will say 140-145 when asked. In other words, there are a lot of people who think they are a genius.

By the way, mine is 140 or so.

:P

I kid, I have no idea and see no reason to know.

Yeah, everyone I know has an IQ of 140+ also. I guess we just are lucky to know all the gifted people in America. :)

I think people just don't want to admit to being "normal" or statistics are completely wrong. The other possibility is that the 140 of today is the 100 of 50 years ago.

85. well, IQ scores tend to regress toward the mean over time
actually the tests are much more open-minded, varied and culture-bound compared to the past. I'm guessing a lot of folks our age were probably tested with the Stanford Binet test or in group IQ tests (which probably are a lot less reliable). I don't know if there is test creep, per se. That might be worth a look, you've made me curious. But, interestingly enough, our abilities to think and process should improve over time.

:)

here's a little piece that talks about this...

51. Tested twice ...

And when I say tested, I mean a one-on-one test that takes hours to complete. Bored me to tears. Both scores were similar.

Suffice to say, I joined Mensa, decided it was like taking that test every minute of every day, and went on to become a classic underachiever.

The classic IQ test is pretty much crap for determining how "smart" you are in the real world. (Irony alert: People with very high and very low scores tend to understand this somewhat instinctively. Those in the middle don't.) It gages various things that can indicate an ability to learn, to solve problems, or to understand various concepts, but that doesn't mean much without some practical application. I am supposedly highly adept at mathematics and abstract reasoning, yet the very idea of calculus sends me into a fit of random twitches and screams that scares the cat.

My ex-wife is a mathematician, and I'm fairly certain this is the basic reason we got divorced. :-)

I'd rather think about philosophy or compose a book of poetry, and to support myself I basically sell useless crap to people and then explain to them how to use this crap that has no beneficial use.

Go figure.

I was 20, with only a two point decline. And once again in my late twenties with the same result as the second.

Pretty good considering the test is geared towards children, and the hell I put my brain thru in high school and college!

That said, I did horribly on the SAT's. and I suck at traditional math.

61. There's a serious diminishing-returns effect
One severely "gifted' person's website: http://jonathanscorner.com/writing/gem/

What strikes me is the need to have social rules like "Don't talk about the things you're interested in with someone you've just met. Never mind that, to you, abstract conversation is a staple of acquaintanceship and friendship. To the other person, it may be boring, unpleasant, or a sign of unwanted romantic interest." It really doesn't sound all that pleasant.

There seems to be a point of diminishing returns, where having a higher IQ score (whatever that measures, other than ability to take an IQ test, is up for debate) does not result in any greater real-world ability, and actually starts to interfere with social functioning. Sort of like the three-eyed salamanders in Shufflebrain, or like Lao Tzu's statement "Better to stop short than fill to the brim. Better stop short than fill to the brim. Oversharpen the blade, and the edge will soon blunt"

60. I don't know mine...
but my oldest child is 135. My middle child is 154. I'm not sure about the youngest, but I'd bet he is somewhere in between. Granted, Mr. Z. has an encyclopedic kind of brain, but I scored in the 99th percentile of college bound students on my SATs, despite being a totally mediocre student. So, I must have contributed some brain power to our kids.

However, I have ADD, so unless I consider something to be interesting and I don't have to do it repeatedly, I don't have any particular advantage over anyone else.

68. That is ironic, as I don't believe (well, I believe that the result is
correct, but that it does not imply much information)

The IQ test was supposed to have M = 100 (Well, mu = 100 but it is not like it was ever going to go beyond inferential statistics) and SD = 10, and be almost a normal curve. (There is a bump at the lower end proportional to the rate of brain injury in the population)

I still am happy with my band sixes though. The premier gave me an award. (Premier = top elected official in each state)

71. Somewhere in the vicinity between
135-150, depending on mood, time of day, specific test, conditions of taking test, etc. I took SATs and ACH tests a very long time ago--almost 35 years ago. I scored pretty high on both in SATs; very high on Verbal ACH test, but low on Math ACH. I always laughed about the fact that I had a higher aptitude than actual achievement in Math, which essentially meant I was not motivated to succeed very much in Math. I always did like science, though, and science often uses a lot of math--I just never put the two together.

I only applied to one college. If I didn't make it into there, I didn't care. I got in with no problem, but had to eventually leave since it was a very great sum of money for me and my family to pay, even though I was working since it was a private college. That same college nowadays is about $35,000.

No the scale doesn't go that high... so it's usually some idiot "expert" trying to figure out what you would have scored if it did. Which is why mine varies so much. Different idiot experts! Different tests.

Anyway the whole thing is beyond a joke - the tests are so biased and culturally-dependent that they don't measure intelligence at all, they just measure how good you are at taking certain types of tests.

Khash.

Very few people have IQ's that high. Now I do believe that most of the people on this site are of very high intelligence, but I have a hard time believing that all of us are geniuses. Plus, IQ tests are bullshit anyway, as are most standardized tests. I took that internet one once that pops up every now and again and got a 124, which still put me in the above average category. However, all the time I was taking that test it struck me that most of the questions measured education more than intelligence. Although I've never taken a real IQ test, I have no reason to believe those are any different.

111. DU isn't a random sample
Edited on Fri May-26-06 02:51 PM by AlienGirl
To be on DU, one needs to be smart enough to use a computer proficiently. That rules out quite a few people. Then, of those people who are smart enough to be good with computers, there will also be many who are not smart enough to follow politics (or who simply don't understand why they should). That narrows the population down even further. Of that group, some will be smart enough to be liberal*, so that makes the sample size smaller still. Of those, only a few will be smart enough to keep up with fast-paced discussions like we have here for long. Narrower again. And of that final sample, it is (theoretically) only DUers who actually know their IQ, which means they have to have had it tested, and who are willing to reveal it, which means they're either relatively indifferent about it, or drunk, and that makes the sample pretty small indeed, and not at all randomized.

Tucker

*I'm kidding, there are some smart conservatives. Or am I?

Edited to add: DU also has a statistically high incidence of autism/Asperger's syndrome. Also not a coincidence.

83. "GENIUSES" on old tests are merely "SUPERIOR" today.
Sorry to burst anyone's bubble. If your score was obtained more than 15 or so years ago, it would be lower today.

Due to a phenomenon called the Flynn Effect, IQ tests have to be renormed and made more difficult approximately every generation. As a result, someone who scored in the genius range 20 years ago probably will come out merely "superior" if tested today. Still very respectable scores, but hardly worth bragging about.

This is an important lesson, though, because it has implications for public policy. In general, people score a lot higher on the older tests than they do on newer IQ tests. A person's IQ score can determine whether or not they receive the death penalty or certain educational or social services. The year they took the test will make a big difference in what decisions are made about their fate. Consider the following (link below):

Stephen J. Ceci, professor of human development at Cornell, reports in American Psychologist ( Vol. 58, No. 10, pp. 778-790), a journal of the American Psychological Association:

"Our findings imply that some borderline death row inmates or capital murder defendants who were not classified as mentally retarded in childhood because they took an older version of an IQ test might have qualified as retarded if they had taken a more recent test," Ceci says. "That's the difference between being sentenced to life imprisonment versus lethal injection."

A diagnosis of mental retardation also determines whether a person is eligible for Social Security disability benefits. And the year in which a military recruit takes an IQ test can determine whether he or she is eligible for service or certain occupations and ranks.

Three tests with scores from 138 to 169... and the pendulum of intelligence swings an equal distance in both directions... from very clever to dumb as dirt:)

It doesn't guarantee a pleasing personality, wealth, social status... not a darn thing. The only guarantee I've found is that no one is perfect, no one knows everything, humans only know a grain of sand compared to all the beaches in the world, and we are easily misunderstood.

The best thing about Mensa are the special interest groups. I was in the Headbanger's SIG for a long time and wrote for the publication, VoxMetalluM. Fun stuff! I'm in the Parapsychology SIG now. More fun! You'd love Young M's, Ava! Full of creative kids just like yourself. There's even a biker SIG... Hell's M's:)

The worst thing is the need to defend your membership. No one would give a hoot if you walked around wearing a sport letter, or if you had sport trophies on your mantle, but try wearing a Mensa sweatshirt! :eyes:

100. On the Internet everyone has a high IQ!
When you're on the internet your IQ is whatever you say it is! Watch this... I have an IQ of 146. Notice how I subtly chose the 140's, 130 seems a bit low and I like to flatter myself but 150 seems a little unbelievable so I settled for the 140's.

Next I'll gain 10lbs of muscle in 10 seconds.. WATCH THIS! Bam I now weigh 215 lbs at 6'2. My BF% is somewhere between 14-15%... or is it? BAM now it's 10%, KICKASS!

Now it's time to take some internet personality tests that flatter me even more. Which Harry Potter Character are you. You are Harry, you are awesome, you are the best person ever but you have some small but charming character flaws. Which city are you? You are Boston, you are super educated, smart, and sophisticated. I wish the maddox personality test still worked. It was five questions which always resulted in " your a dipshit you just took another worthless internet personality test proving your lack personality altogther!"

The best part about all these internet personality quizes and IQ tests is their definently not trying to butter you up in order to make you more prone to their advertisements.

Wait I decided I want an IQ of 154 instead of 146, I think I deserve it so to answer the original post my IQ is 154.

That was the minimum IQ for the gifted program in the school district. My sister was also identified as "gifted".
On my best standardized test, scorewise, I was in the 98th percentile on the verbal section and 99th percentile on the math section. That was in seventh grade. I didn't do as well on the SAT, around 90th percentile, although I know that students on the low end usually do not take it.
Perhaps, I really am getting less intelligent though.
On the online tests, I score anywhere between 125-160 depending on the test and if I am really in the mood to concentrate.

133. I am going to answer....
However, I want to say I am proud of my IQ, however, IQ isn't everything. IQ in my case is mostly due to logical stuff and spatial coordination. However, there is a whole other "IQ" score for street smarts and for other things that are not covered by a conventional IQ test.

That being said, my IQ is 170.
