sermon or as a speech to the Rotary Club. Otherwise, it may very well be appropriate and elicit the intended merriment.

Oh, yeah, this doesn't apply if the recipient of your joke is a female employee, especially one over whom you have a supervisory role...we kinda frown on that stuff these days. :P
