Can dogs get schizophrenia? |
|
I think my dog is having auditory hallucinations because he keeps barking at the door for no reason. He just comes out of no where and starts barking. The hair on his back goes up, and he just goes nuts at the door.
He never used to do this either. Someone is always home with him, so there isn't any chance a burglar tried to break in or anything.
I just thought I would tell you about my dog and his doggy mental problem.

2. They do have prozac for puppies, I think |
|
I heard, once, somebody had their dog on it.
When I tried to research it, so far anyway, I only came up with: A dog present can help people with schizophrenia feel more motivated...
So, if you had schizophrenia I guess it would be more common!

Puppy Uppers/Doggie Downers
Joy.....Gilda Radner Jill.....Laraine Newman
Joy: Gee, Sparky's been acting dull and listless lately. I just don't know what's wrong with him.
Jill: My dog Skippy used to be like that.. until I found out about.. ..Puppy Uppers. Puppy Uppers pep up your pooch, plus, they help control his weight.
Joy: Maybe it's me, Jill, but I'd say Sparky's perked up a little too much.
Jill: No argument there, Joy. When my Skippy gets too frisky, what I do is give him these.. Doggie Downers.
Joy: Doggie Downers.. mellows out your mutt. Hmm.. I'll try them.
Jill: That's Puppy Uppers for when your dog's like this. And.. ..Doggie Downers, for when your dog's like this. From Hound-Doze.

3. Anything with a mind can get mental disorders pretty much. |
|
Similarity to some human condition is probable, but you are not going to be able to DSM-IV, I shouldn't think.

5. If his thinking was really disordered... |
|
...I would imagine he wouldn't be that consistent in barking at the same thing. Maybe there's a high-pitched noise you can't hear out there.

10. It would more likely be /Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band/. |
|
In another innovation, the album (in its original LP form that was later released on CD) ends in an unusual way, beginning with a 15-kilohertz high-frequency tone (put on the album at John Lennon's suggestion, said to be "especially intended to annoy your dog"), followed by an endless loop made by the runout groove looping back into itself.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band#Technical_innovation

12. You could have a ghost... and it could be spooking your pooch. |
|
They tend to see things we can't.
I would be concerned if it was more random, like barking at a napkin one moment and the mop the next.. but if his attention is focused on one particular object or location, it could be a ghost.
It happens.
Maybe you should talk to the ghost and ask it to go away.

14. Maybe you've got an oppossum or somesuch that's making him react that way. |
|
My border collie, Mist, acted like that for awhile, and I thought she was nuts. Then one night I saw an oppossum well-hidden in the holly tree next to the porch. The poor dog was trying to tell me we had an intruder!
