3. OK. Remove Griffey.
The rest are infielders, and better than the 70s Dodgers.

8. Folkloric fallacy
Don't make me look this up, but Tinker, Evers and Chance actually turned few double plays.

11. True...but they're immortal nevertheless...
And they were Cubbies.

(they averaged 95 double plays a year while they played together)

16. Okay, I think I got it
That chart accounts for all double plays turned by the Cubs in those years. Tinker to Evers to Chance (or 6-4-3 if you're scoring at home) wouldn't have made all of them — particularly in that era of short fences and shallow-playing outfielders. (Ty Cobb had a few unassisted double plays.)

28. The fourth would actually be Harry Steinfeldt. He was the 3rd
basemen during the T to E to C days.

I only caught the end of the Big Red Machine. It was Bench at 3rd, Concepcion at SS, Ron Oester at 2nd, and Rose at first. I think Tony Perez was already on the Expos, and Joe Morgan had joined the Wheeze kids in Philly when I first watched the Reds.

That Dodger infield was a fine one indeed. Those guys must've played together for 10 years.

because everytime I read their boxscore I see E-Concepcion!"

I don't remember who said it, but that still remains one of the greatest one-liners ever uttered by a pro athlete....

9. But they got it done.
Arguably the best starting five ever. Problem was that the Celtic bench sucked and the guys I mentioned ended up playing 46 minutes a game. Thats how The Lakers got them. Fresh legs off the bench.

Couldn't tell you the Lakers' starting five.

My glory days were with West, McMillian, Chamberlain, Goodrich and Hairston, and Elgin Baylor's bad knees.

21. probably not even the best or most famous dodgers combo...
what about Cox, Reese, Robinson, Hodges? ('51 Dodgers)

and even though NO ONE will ever give them love (myself included): Gruber, Lee, Alomar, Olerud ('92 Jays)

But what for my money is the best will be Oberkfell, Smith, Herr, Hernandez ('82 cards)

fwiw i give more credit to combos that had to play on carpet (especially that crappy, first-generation carpet)

26. Man, it would be hard to top those guys in whining and crying!!!!
Actually they were quite good at certain things, though.

Steve Garvey was great on lecturing on family values while screwing every babe who walked by. Another Garvey skill is proving that even dumb guys can be mentioned as Senate Candidates in California, not really a surprise, especially because he was the original 'puke. When Murdoch bought the team, it was surprising that he didn't bring Garvey back in some capacity, like Manager or General Manager. Garvey is certainly up to Fox News standards. Mostly he runs up big bills and skips out of town these days, but also runs informercials for snake oil diet loss products that are basically useless. (Enforma)

Sore loser Davey Lopes, is mostly notable for his managerial decision to threaten to order his pitchers to bean Ricky Henderson on the grounds Henderson stole a base while Henderson's team was kicking Lopes's team's ass.

I think 1978 is the only World Series that the Yankees won that I look back at fondly. After winning the first two games, Garvey et al, went into this vast strut, egged on by the Los Angeles media, possibly then the most gutless baseball media on the face of the earth. (I really felt bad for Tom Neidenfuer for having to talk to those guys - according to them, Jack Clark could only hit Home runs if the pitcher lobbed the ball at them. Neidenfuer did show himself to be true Dodger blue; he let his career go in the toilet because of two blown saves in the NCLS series) Nobody seems to have informed this class of morons that it takes four games to win the World Series. I think they sulked for about a decade when Reggie Jackson broke the news that it indeed takes 4 games.

27. Hmmm...how about the "$100,000 infield"--
--of Connie mack's Athletics, in 1911-14? McInnis, Collins, Barry and Baker? Collins and Baker are both two of the best ever at their positions, and the other guys were at least solid players. As for your guys--they were OK, I'm not putting them down. The longest-lasting infield ever deserves respect. But Garvey was a little overrated--he made a *lot* of outs, and his MVP was a joke--Jimmy Wynn should have won it in '74...Lopes was a slightly-less skilled version of Joe Morgan...Russell was OK, and Cey was underrated--but then, every third baseman in history except for Traynor and Brooks has been underrated. They were good enough to help win several division titles, and a World Series. But if you put a gun to my head, I'd have to vote for Rose-Morgan-Concepcion-Perez...

Welcome to DU. :hi:

32. I'd go along with all those except Garvey
It doesn't take any real defensive skill to play first base. That, and Garvey was a total asshole from everything I've heard.
Lopes, Cey and Russell were great, though. They all seemed like real shot and a beer working class guys, and they just showed up and did the job with no celebrity jock bullshit.
