How do you wash the stench of death off a dog? |
|
Today at the beach my dog rolled around in something very large and very, very, very, dead. Dead skunk smells like Chanel No. 5 compared to this. I barrelled down the freeway with all windows down, breathing through my mouth, and I still nearly threw up.
I washed him outside when I got home but he is still rank. What do you recommend for his second bath tonight after the fresh air and sunshine treatment?

16. Never use a detergent of any kind on a dog |
|
you screw up their coats and their skin...badly.
A shampoo with tea tree oil should do the job.

3. Tomato juice is supposed to work for skunk |
|
Not sure about very, very, very dead :)
I'm also thinking vinegar mixed in the soap...in works when washing stinky clothes.
Good luck...sounds like at least one of you had a lot of fun at the beach!

Early this morning he went out, rolled around in horse manure, came back in and jumped on my bed.
Oh, the little bastard is NOT in my good graces today.

|
good luck. I tried nair once as a teen, it made my fingernails soft and my skin really soft but didn't dissolve much hair. I think it has some sort of dead-keratin liquifying in it. Wouldn't use it on a dog anyways, probably allergic/reactive to it. Had a dog I lived with run up to me 1 day dripping maggots off her back. Yuck. Good luck there.

15. there are formulas for skunked dogs that probably would work |
|
Edited on Sat May-27-06 05:50 PM by leftofthedial
might bleach the dog's fur a bit. Tomato juice doesn't really work.
Recipe #1: 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide 1/4 cup Baking Soda 1 teaspoon liquid soap Mix in a bucket (it will fizz). Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes. Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes. Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it. Rinse thoroughly.
Recipe #2: 1 cup of vinegar 1 cup hydrogen peroxide 1 cup of dish soap Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.
Recipe #3: 1 pint hydrogen peroxide 2/3 cup baking soda 1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap Sponge mixture onto the dog's fur. Let sit two to five minutes then rinse with plain water. Second batch may be needed. Use fresh ingredients.
Recipe #4: 2/3 water 1/3 organic apple cider Rinse the dog thoroughly, be careful of his eyes.

17. Liberal amounts of tomato juice |
|
and fresh lemons rubbed into the skin.
A few officers I worked w/ used this solution whenever they came into contact w/ bodies that had sat for a few weeks in the summer heat.
It will take a while to scrub it out but if that doesn't work, you'll have to shave the dog and apply the juices directly to the skin.

that was sprayed by a skunk. The smell lasted for a long, long time. Unfortunately I was on vacation in Canada and it was a road trip. I had to put up with that smell in very close quarters.

from my experience I have to say nothing else works as well. I used it on a dog that was sprayed by a momma skunk and four little ones. Took the smell right out. I also sprinkled it directly on the skunk spray on the porch and it took the smell out.

|
if he's that stinky, do it with straight vinegar then rinse him with clean water (keep it out of his eyes and ears)
that will probably do the trick!

23. Lemons, according to the guy who set up the Body Farm. |
|
Forensic anthropologists all swear by lemon shampoos. Soften up the lemons, then squeeze over and massage in. Use the peel, too, to scrub.
I've used grapefruit the same way on myself (don't ask.)

for his third bath of the day. I cut three off the tree in the yard, quartered them, rubbed them all over him in the tub, then rinsed him off. He no longer smells like the Grim Reaper after a hard day in the salt mines.

|
Dead Skunk ( Loudon Wainwright III )
Crossin' the highway late last night He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right He didn't see the station wagon car The skunk got squashed and there you are!
You got yer Dead skunk in the middle of the road Dead skunk in the middle of the road You got yer dead skunk in the middle of the road Stinkin' to high Heaven!
Take a whiff on me, that ain't no rose! Roll up yer window and hold yer nose You don't have to look and you don't have to see 'Cause you can feel it in your olfactory
You got yer Dead skunk in the middle of the road Dead skunk in the middle of the road You got yer dead skunk in the middle of the road Stinkin' to high Heaven!
Yeah you got yer dead cat and you got yer dead dog On a moonlight night you got yer dead toad frog Got yer dead rabbit and yer dead raccoon The blood and the guts they're gonna make you swoon! You got yer Dead skunk in the middle of the road Dead skunk in the middle of the road You got yer dead skunk in the middle of the road Stinkin' to high Heaven!
C'mon stink!
You got it! It's dead, it's in the middle Dead skunk in the middle! Dead skunk in the middle of the road Stinkin' to high heaven! All over the road, technicolor man! Oh, you got pollution It's dead, it's in the middle And it's stinkin' to high, high Heaven!

29. Lemons, vinegar and a baking soda |
|
Use generous quantities (tomato juice is an old wives tale and does NOT work!)
I put them all in a tub with an antibacterial liquid soap and lots of hot water. Lather repeatedly and rinse. My dogs have rolled in every single dead thing out in the back 40 - Trust me on this - lemons, vinegar and baking soda!

31. RealLemon Lemon Juice, by the case. |
|
:puke: The two dogs we had in 1999 (not the same ones we have now---may the sweeties rest in peace :) ) encountered a skunk in our backyard. Hubby thought it was a cat, but it turned out to be a polecat. :yoiks: Both were heavily sprayed, and I chased 'em down in the yard at 11 PM during a thunderstorm with RealLemon. (Yeah, that was so fun! :( ) The lemon juice was a godsend---they still smelled, even after two baths, but it was much more tolerable than full-strength. It took a while for the smell to cycle out of their fur, but it did eventually.
Good luck---I know it's terrible! :yoiks:
