'Breakfast Club' principal Gleason dies
Bah

Paul Gleason, who played the go-to bad guy in "Trading Places" and the angry high school principal in "The Breakfast Club," has died. He was 67.

Gleason died at a local hospital Saturday of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer linked to asbestos, said his wife, Susan Gleason.

"Whenever you were with Paul, there was never a dull moment," his wife said. "He was awesome."

A native of Miami, Gleason was an avid athlete. Before becoming an actor, he played Triple-A minor league baseball for a handful of clubs in the late 1950s.

2. man, that sucks
he did an amazing job in that film. but everyone did. each character had so much depth, and it would have been very easy not to make his three-dimensional, but as it stand they gave you a little insight into his assholeness

21. I sorta used that line in a pool hall
a teenager told me "rules were made to be broken". I glared at him and said "so were skulls".

Gleason also was the coach in the obscure movie "Johnny be good" and had another fantastic line which has gotten me laughs:
"If you are looking for sympathy, it's in the dictionary between sh*t and syphilis!"

He was great in everything I ever saw him in. The Breakfast Club is one of my favorites. It came out the year I got out of school, or close to it and I "knew" everyone in that movie. :)

I could swear that in that conversation with Carl, the maintenance guy, he said he was just a teacher.

23. He says "Carl, I've been teaching for 22 years ..."
Which, to me, says that he started as a teacher until he was promoted to vice principal. Just like my former German teacher became vice principal and the guy who was my vice principal was a teacher before he got the vice job.
I cannot find a reference where they call him a vice principal, but he must be, since the crimes of the BC did not all happen in the same class. Bender pulled a false alarm, Brian had a flare gun in his locker, Andy taped Larry Lester's buns together, and Claire skipped school to go shopping. Clearly those involve different classes and different teachers, all being handled by the person who handles discipline - the vice principal.

Edited on Mon May-29-06 09:36 AM by long_green
and not the one where he blindly sends his SWAT teams in to get shot to pieces saying, "Kick ass."

No, it is when Alan Rickman is falling to his death. The camera shows a long shot of his body falling and Gleason's character, clueless to the end says, "I hope that's not one of the hostages."
