The Mikado
Remember when I talked about doing The Mikado?

Well, some pictures of the show are now up on the web, for anyone who's interested.

See if you can guess which dresses I worked on ;)

1. "A bit of corroborative detail to give an air of artistic verisimilitude
to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative."

Beautiful costumes, and I have no idea which ones are yours. They all look great.

2. I think our G&S Society used that same costumer
for a few shows! How many Canadian G&S costumers are there?

Your show looks adorable - did you update "I Have a Little List"? (we tend to stick to the scripts and the "traditional" look but you HAVE to update the list!) I saw "Utopia" (of all things) done with a Roaring Twenties theme by the Blue Hill Troupe in New York, and it worked nicely.

We're doing Yeoman this year - we do both inside and outside (at our Academy of Music, and at a huge outdoor gardens). I did props for 12 years (did all the shows) but can't do it anymore because of travel for my work, but will be ushering at the gardens in 2 weeks, so I'll report back.

5. Savoy in Philadelphia
claims to be the oldest continually-operating G&S rep group in the world - founded in 1901, with a nice letter in the archives from Sullivan, thanking us for not mucking up their shows.

We have worked with you! I remember doing Iolanthe and a couple of others.... maybe, 5 years ago for Iolanthe?

10. Definitey Iolanthe - looked through the pics & recognized them
They were GREAT costumes, especially the Fairy Queen

It's my all-time favorite show: The 2 Lord Chancellor's Songs ("giving agreeable girls away" and "said I to myself, said I"), that great ensemble song at the end of Act 1 ("...the hoi polloi! A Greek remark!"), The Fairy Queens Song ("Oh Foolish Faye"), The Nightmare Patter Song, and The Cliche Trio ("faint heart ne'er won fair lady"). Of all of the shows, it's also the one that works best in the beautiful outdoor theater at Longwood Gardens, out in Philadelphia's horse country. The fairies come out of the woods above and behind the stage, and it looks great.

It's also the last one I did in the cycle - the last of 12 years in Savoy as props mistress, and went out with a bang: gorgeous crowns that lit up on 25 fairies, and wands that looked like they were actually shooting sparks (thanks to the manufacturer of that iridescent ribbon that you see in party stores).

I believe Iolanthe is the one that Jan went to see. You had canadians flying in to see your last hurrah with props ;)

20. I knew that! I had forgotten that someone from the costumers
came in to see that show, but now that you mention it, they did! Can't remember if it was the indoor show or the outdoor, but I think the outdoor!

Hope the Canadians thought it was worth it - Winnepeg isn't exactly a quick hop & a jump, either!

Glad there are other G&S nuts on here. (true story - a girlfriend called me at the last minute last year and asked if I wanted to drive out to the Gardens with her for a Savoy show - she had free tickets she had gotten at work. I said yes. She wanted to leave at intermission, and I wanted to stay. She got pissy and said "I didn't know you were that into Gilbert & Sullivan, or I wouldn't have asked YOU to come." Okay then.)

21. Why did she even bother going?!
Thats stupid.

If I recall correctly, they thought it was great. It was like 5 years ago, no? I don't remember for sure.

If you ever decide to come to winnipeg, make sure to come when our show is on! I'll get you some tickets ;)

23. Not yet, but guess WHY
He had to take off to Europe on business, and should be calling this week to set up something for when he gets back.

Of course, it's the 'wait and see if he calls' thing, but who cares :P

26. Just passing by, .... Gilbert and Sullivan - rap creators.
Their patter songs. Wonderful stuff. Of course, Glick, Handel and Mozart did that sort of stuff, too. Are oratorios the wellspring of rap?
