Wallet Found Right Where It Was Dropped - In 1971

It took 35 years, but someone finally returned Gary Karafiat's wallet.

Karafiat, who lost the wallet as a 14-year-old freshman at Benet Academy in Lisle, picked up the black billfold from Wheaton's St. Francis High School on Friday morning.

It was 1971 when it fell beneath the bleachers at St. Francis' gym, where Karafiat was watching a basketball game from the top row of seats.

"As soon as I dropped it, I knew I was never going to see it again," said Karafiat, who is now Naperville's community relations director. "I never spent another minute thinking about it."

At least not until he received a call this past week notifying him that construction workers had removed bleachers from the gym, and a St. Francis teacher had found the wallet underneath them.

"As soon as she started to describe what was found, I knew exactly what they were talking about," he said. "The memory just flashed back."
