1. I voted for Gin,...
though I find vermouth helpful as well.

2. I consider vermouth to be a flavored wine, not a liquor

7. Winston Churchill martini
Pour the gin, glance at an unopened bottle of vermouth on the other side of the room, shake and pour.

19. My brother's Extra Dry martini.
One summer when I was in college, and he had just graduated, we worked at the same bar. His recipe for the Extra Dry was to raise the shaker up and softy say "vermouth", and that's all the vermouth the drink got.

My technique was to grab the vermouth bottle and wave it once around the outside of the shaker without ever pouring, but I use his technique these day.

8. Musso & Frank Grill is one of my favorite places
in no small part because when you order a Martini, they bring you a Martini - no questions asked, like "Gin or Vodka?" or, worse, "What kind of Martini?"

9. Cool place, Musso & Franks.
About 20 years ago I was there with some friends. We had the worst table back by the restrooms, with a drip landing in the middle of the table because of torrential rains outside.

I had the unusual experience of having Sally Fields stare at me, as if she knew me, as she waited to use the restroom. I thought I should say something, but didn't. Only in Hollywood.

11. Rather like asking what liquor is used to make a brandy.
I can hear the bottle calling to me from downstairs - I think that it really is time for a martini. :9

14. Alas, I only drink vodka martinis...
gin's the one liquor I absolutely cannot abide. It was my dad's drink. I thought it was, like, the smell of his aftershave or something until I had my first taste of it at 13 years old or so. I took a drink and then thought, "OH MY GOD IT'S MY DAD!" I haven't had gin since that day.

But I'm real partial to a vodka martini. Very dry, slightly dirty.

16. Why do I always want whatever drink gets mentioned?
Someone talks about martinis and I want one.
Someone talks about Irish Whisky and I want some.

Am I a lush?

18. Vodka...
Dirty. Straight vodka with olive juice and olives. No vermouth. And lots of ice.

Khash.

22. I don't drink martinis.
Don't like gin, and vodka makes me sick. Come to think of it, I very rarely do any liquor at all.

23. I Was Talking To A Bartender Recently
I was staying in a somewhat swanky hotel and went to the bar for the free drink each day. I saw people orering martini's and he made them, automatically, with vodka. I asked him when martini's stopped being made with gin.

He said that in the last 6 or 7 years, so many people expected them to be made with vodka, that they started making them that way, unless someone SPECIFIED gin! He said he's not sure how that happened though. He said he had been a fulltime bartender for nearly 25 years and never made a martini with vodka unless someone ordered a VODKA martini! He said it changed kind of suddenly.
