What's your favorite Bogie film?
Edited on Tue May-30-06 01:11 PM by chaska
I bought a DVD at the 99cent store (guess how much I paid?) called 'Beat The Devil'. I didn't expect much for 99 cents, but it's a great movie. And, my god, what a cast! There's Bogart of course, Peter Lorre, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, and it's directed by John Huston. Can't beat it (the devil) with a stick! The supporting players are just simply outstanding, the bad guys are just excellent. The English guy's name I can't remember but he gives one of the better performences in the film. Gina L. has the most perfect bone structure, nose, lips, cheek bones, chin I've ever seen. The film is worth seeing for her extraordinary face alone.

Bogie is actually the weakest part of the film. By this time (1953) he's looking a little old, short (it's really obvious here) and weak (he looks almost ill in some scenes), and the tobacco is really affecting his voice. And his acting isn't up to standard either. But as the film goes on he gets better.

But what I love about this movie is the writing. It's like a film from the 40s in that way, the dialog is so clever, witty. It seems a bit rushed at times, but I guess that's an '06 prejudice. I do love that rapid fire dialog though. Everybody seemed much smarter then.

Huston will go unrated here. I just didn't observe his talents, entertained as I was. I did note the sort of Hemingway-esque ending which is a trademark of Huston's. I do enjoy his films.

I guess I've probably seen all of Bogie's films now. I wasn't even aware this one existed. I was very pleasantly surprised to find it's a good one.

So what's your favorite?

1. The Maltese Falcon
That is one of the few movies that if I come across it while channel surfing, I put the remote down.

"The stuff that dreams are made of."

2. You know, that is probably my least favorite. I don't know why.
But is that the one with Lauren Bacall: "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow."? She was so awesome in that one. That line doesn't even make much sense but DAAAHAAAM!!! she makes it sound absolutely sexual.

26. Very chilling,
I think you'll like it.

It was also remade in 1990 starring Mickey Rourke, but I like the original much better, just can't beat Boggie, huh?

5. Man, that's a tough one
It'd have to be a toss-up between Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen and The Big Sleep.

The kid in me says African Queen; my adult self is voting for The Big Sleep.

(Btw, my mom picked up Beat the Devil for $.99 somewhere recently and sent it to me thinking I might like it -- but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'll have to do it soon!)

"Casablanca" is magnificent, as is "The Maltese Falcon"

But the pairing of Bogie with Katharine Hepburn is irresistible.

14. Yes ma'am. Ya know....
it's really interesting to see the contrast when Bogart is paired with strong female characters and weaker more "traditionally submissive" type females. I think he's at his best when he has a strong woman to play off of. In 'Beat the Devil' Jennifer Jones plays a bit of a ditz. Coincidence that Bogie is weak in this film???

I do love "To Have and Have Not". Bacall and Bogie are great in it!

"You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."

One of the best movie lines, ever.

16. to have and have not is definitely my favorite,
Although, The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon are greats.

But to have and have not...

Bogie, Bacall (at her 'slim' best),and walter brennan. All wonderfully directed by Howard Hawks.

Maltese Falcon is a close second for having peter lorre and sidney greenstreet.

27. Yeah... what a disappointment
From IMDB

Dr. Clitterhouse is fascinated with the working of the criminal mind. His interest is so deep that he finds the best way to observe criminals in action is to become one himself! Whilst robbing a safe at an exclusive party he stumbles across an organized gang trying to the same thing. He teams up with the gang to observe them in action but one of the members, Rocks Valentine would like nothing better than to see Clitterhouse out of the way

Edward G. Robinson is Clitterhouse; Bogart is Rocks Valentine (which sounds dirty itself).

Hmmm, maybe I should revise my selection of the best Bogart movie. I'm watching "The Big Sleep" now and just laughed through the sceen where Lauren Bacall calls Marlow's bluff about calling the police.

Great stuff!

32. "In a Lonely Place"
One of the most underrated films ever made, and Bogie's best performance, bar none. An early Nicholas Ray film, Bogie plays a screenwriter mixed up in murder, and it is simply *the* best of the film noirs--even better than "Out of the Past" or "Night and the City". ("Chinatown", to me, was a latert neo-noir, not a noir per se.) See it, see it, see it...if you haven't...

He stood up to the HUAC, refused to name names. One of the most liberal actors in Hollywood at the time.

My favorite Bogart movie, and I have many, is The Big Sleep. As someone upthread said, it can be confusing. The producer cut too many scenes to shorten the film, and made it somewhat difficult to follow (if memory serves)

41. Oh, I don't mean the man personally. I mean the man as an
actor. I don't like his style; I don't like the style of the time. There are very few old films I'm able to enjoy because I can never get past the dialogue & melodrama. I realize this sounds uncultured/offensive/uninformed to some. I can live with that. :)

45. Well, ya know, boo...
This movie I'm talking about in the OP has been described by some as a spoof on this sort of quasi-noir film. According to what I read it's all a big joke. When you look at it like that, as I often do, it's really quite enjoyable.

Is it all old movies or just Bogie's? If the former you will be permanently off my dance card ... east is east and west is west, and never the twain shall ... dance ... toots. ;)

...Key Largo, To Have and Have Not, The African Queen, or Casablanca on, I simply HAVE to watch until the end. It's impossible to turn away.

So I guess that answers your question.

I love the dialogue in To Have and Have Not. For several weeks after my first viewing of that film, university friends and I went around saying, "Was you ever bit by a dead bee?" Yes, I know it's Walter Brennan's line, but it stays with you.

On edit: The chemistry and banter between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart really make that film, and Hoagy Carmichael is a pleasure, too.
