They are basically the heads of certain fern fronds. They grow in abundance this time of year in swampy type areas near rivers and streams. I've spent some time picking them myself. Although perhaps "foodies" like them, I'm only aware of locals who eat them, usually with butter and white Vinegar.

Good Job!!! I see you are from California. I never heard of them till I moved to Maine. I always thought it was just a local thing. But "foodies" have picked it up, huh??? Hmmmm ...
