Name a local restaurant you would recommend to a visitor...
I got two that I would recommend for Tucson. One is El Charro Cafe', great Mexican food. Go to the original one in Downtown Tucson. And, Mimi's Cafe'. Go to the one right by Tucson Mall. You will be happy to eat at either one, guaranteed. Here are some links.

80. Midori for sushi in chicago, Arun's for thai.
Ethio Cafe on clark st. is gone now, but it used to be one of our all-time favourite places, with fantastic ethiopian food.

where are spring and green zebra? are they relatively new...? i'm not familiar with them...what type of cuisine are they?

actually haven't been to arun's in awhile- sorry to hear it's slipping...it was always a favourite for special occasions.

never been to bentanara- but it would be very difficult for it top the fare at midori.

3. In Bloomington Minnesota
For lunch (only open lunchtimes M-Sat) I highly recommend Wally's Roast Beef on 90th Street, just 1/2 mile west of I-35W.

For Tex-Mex food it is Pepitos (in Minneapolis on 48th and Chicago). Their salsa is incredible and their enchiladas are to die for.

For Thai food I have two suggestions - The Royal Orchid in Roseville and Spice Thai in Savage.

For Buffet food - There is only one place to go when one wants to strap on the feedbag, Mystic Lake Casino buffet!

4. When in Austin Texas
For sushi, DK Sushi in south austin...I recommend the Mike's Roll
For Tex Mex, hit El Arroyo (on 6th, close to downtown) or Little Mexico (S. 1st)
For Austin Eclectic, try Kerby Lane (S. Lamar) or Magnolia Cafe (S. Congress)
I like Willie Nelson's place too, Texas Roadhouse in south Austin (I-35).

10. There are two in Colorado Springs...
Probably more but I don't go out to eat often...

One is a little place called North End Diner. And that's just what it is. An old-fashioned diner. Tiny place but real food. Only open for breakfast and lunch, though. Closes up at 2 p.m.

The other place that I'd recommend is Conway's Red Top. Hamburgers the size of dinner plates, I kid you not. And they're good.

I haven't been to either place in years, though.

11. This isn't in our village, but in a larger city across the lake:
Ristorante Centrale, Via Locarno 2, Losone, Switzerland.
Specializing in Ticinese cuisine, Ristorante Centrale also has an enormous wine cellar with a vast selection of Swiss and Italian wines; the rissoto with portobello mushrooms is delicious! The interior is decorated with antique sewing machines; in warmer months, you can dine under a pergola in the restaurant garden.

Pioneer Pantry(if its still there!)-good burgers man, hands down some of the best burgers ever, and ever so better, after a night of drinking..:)

Cape Fox Lodge-High end, but food is very good, beer battered halibut is my friend

Rose's Caboose-Hands down, the best burgers, I have ever eaten, and hands down the best fries...:)

16. In Houston,
I would recommend Miguelitos, http://miguelitos.net/. Also, Rocco's Italian restaurant in Katy, along with Los Cucos and Victor's Casa Garcia.

In London, the Gran Paradiso Italian restaurant, and Ristorante Le Palme D'jan (also Italian), both near Victoria station. The Gran Paradiso seems to get bad reviews online, usually with regard to service, but I've eaten there many times and had no problems.

And yes, I'm waaaaay partial to Italian food!

For authentic Chinese in the Hartford area, we need to go to West Hartford to Szechuan Garden, Szechuan Tokyo or China Pan.

For somewhat upscale Italian, I like Hot Tomatoes in Hartford... make sure to get the garlic bread as an appetizer, it's awesome.

I'll post more later.

the owners are an older (caucasian)american man and his korean wife/(war-bride?), and the sushi chef is a mexican.

but Roberto's creations are...the absolute best.

we go there every second friday(payday, dont'cha know), and i always order the same thing- soft shell crab appetizer, sashimi "A"(comes with house salad w/ginger dressing and miso soup), one piece of unagi nigiri, one piece of white tuna nigiri, and a coke...it may be boring- but i know what i like. my wife on the other hand, likes to order new/different things each visit- but we always have enough leftovers to take home for a saturday morning sushi pig-out.

I think that one is Lucy's El Adobe - the worst Mexican-like food I have ever had. For some reason I cannot fathom, Jerry Brown used to eat at Lucy's.

Pueblo Viejo used to be called Zumaya's and was up the street a few blocks. It's a totally different place.

Since you can't be here, I will just post pictures of their food on DU

If you like, you could maybe download an entree from their Web site....

I remember the name Zumayas.

I lived over by LaBrea and Wilshire, and tended to head east to eat.

Though my favorite Thai place, Yai, was up on Fountain a few blocks east of LaBrea. For a long time it had no English sign.

Out here we get nothing but corporate Mexican food, though it is popular.

My husband and I visit Tucson regularly as my mother-in-law lives there. Haven't tried El Charro yet. We had a fabulous dinner at Wildflower (near Wild Oats) last December - have you ever been there? We also love Barrio, in the downtown area.

I am glad Mimi's seems to have improved - my husband and I had the worst breakfast there at the Tucson Mall location several years ago.

41. Here in NYC... there are so many.
My own tiny Zagat's guide ($$$ is for expensive ($40 or more per person); $$ is for moderate ($20 or more per person); $ for inexpensive ($20 or less per person)

Teodora $$$
on 57th, between Lex and 3rd av. - northern Italian cuisine. While many restaurants profess of featuring 'authentic' northern Italian cuisine, very few actually live up to their claim. Teodora is one of these (disclosure: I am from northern Italy), specializing in cuisine from Emilia-Romagna (where I'm from). Their risotto is to die for. Pricey but worth it.

Banjara $$
on 1st av, bet 6 and 7th sts - Indian cuisine. This is one of the better Indian restaurants on 'little India,' a swath of Indian restaurants scattered around E. 6th St. I love the dumpakht, a saucy dish cooked in a soft bread shell.

Paul's Place $
Around St Mark's place - burgers. If you want burgers, come here. The place is small and homey. The prices are very good. They practically have every type of burger you'd want; nothing fancy, just a good burger, good shakes and fries.

42. Agua Linda, Bluebird Cafe & the Taco Stand in Athens, GA.
Edited on Wed May-31-06 10:43 AM by CottonBear
Agua Linda is authentic Mexcian fare (cooked and served by Mexican-Americans) and the Bluebird is Athens' original and oldest vegetarian restaurant (orginally name was the ElDorado back in the 1970s. The ElDorado was where many Athens musicians and artists hung out and drank coffee. The B52s used to practice in a room behind the restaurant in the origianl location. The room was originally part of an African American funeral home business.) The Taco Stand is a venerable Mexican food stand (cheap and good). I can't count how many meals I've eaten at the Taco Stand. In fact, I just ate there yesterday. Black Bean and Rice Sancho, side of Spanish Rice with hot sauce and a side of chunky salsa. The Bluebird's Morning Custard and Bulldog Tofu are classics.
Yum! :)

(Yes, we have ethnic gruops!)

Southeast Asian fusion: Rice Paper in Linden Hills. On the pricey side, limited menu, but yum!

Indian: Indian Palace in Roseville. Unlike a lot of suburban Indian food places, they serve a lunch buffet where each dish has a distinctly different flavor

There's also a wonderful Ethiopian place on Riverside Avenue near Augsburg College, but I can't remember its name.

52. Mine:
If you're ever in Winston-Salem, NC, these are great restaurants: The Filling Station on Fourth St. It's an old gas station that has been very nicely remodeled and is in an upscale older neighborhood. It has a lot of charm! The food is really good too---sandwiches, steaks, other entrees, and the like. It's in Winston-Salem's trendy Arts District. Opie's Southbound Bistro is another great place with similar food; it's on Brookstown Ave. in the old train depot. It has hardwood floors throughout and has sweet potato fries to die for! :D The owner is usually there, and he looks like Ron Howard with hair (hence the name Opie's).

High Point, NC: Noble's Restaurant. This one is on S. Main Street in the downtown area, and it is fusion cuisine with a focus on French food. It's wonderful, the atmosphere is amazing, and the prices are high (but no worse than larger cities).

Greensboro, NC: Anton's Restaurant. It's on Battleground Ave. and has primarily Italian cuisine but also has other entrees. Anton's has been there for many, many years and has been owned by the same family all that time. It used to be called Cellar Anton, but despite the name update, it's the same place. Their lasagna is wonderful! And hubby loves their steaks. :D They've remodeled recently, but it didn't change the great atmosphere any. :D

Makes me glad we moved to this part of the country, to experience first hand the historical landmarks that molded the collective psyche of what is now the USA.

Until we moved up here, I did not understand why pumpkins were a tradition at Halloween, since in Texas pumpkins are way part their prime by the time Halloween rolls around. Here, everything is in perfect synchronicity with the seasonal holidays.

91. If you're ever in Detroit Lakes, MN
in the summer, you definitely want to go to The Bridge, kick back in the Barefoot Bar with a bevie and some of their great appetizers. And all the better on a Sunday afternoon with live Carribean music.
If the weather is uncooperative, Lakeside is a good bar and grill choice (about 24 brews on tap); Zorbaz has great Mexican fare, about a zillion beers on tap, but it can get rather smoky; Shoreham is also a good choice but you may have to wait as it's a popular hangout for our summertime residents.
But then again, who ever comes to Detroit Lakes on purpose?

Tucson has BRAZILLIONS of great Mexican restaurants. I am fond of El Dorado on south 4th, Maria's on south 6th (south of I-10) especially for caldo de queso.

Never tried Mimi's. Have you tried Franks, Bobo's, Brawleys, Bread and Butter, Ajo Cafe or Hungry Fox? all good mom type beakfast/lunch hole-in-the-walls.

As for recommending to visitors, I would have to know what they liked. A nice place to recommend for downtown old barrio patio/good bar type is Cushing Street Bar and Grill.

For quirky types, The Grill is fun - on Congress downtown.

115. Another Orange County one - El Farolito
I go to this place all the time. If you want REAL Mexican (they serve all kinds of stuff you wont find at Taco Bell), go here.

118. Sanford, Dreamdance, Lake Park Bistro ($100+ per person)
A little less expensive: Coquette Cafe (also owned by the D'Amatos), Saffron Indian Bistro, Q, Heaven City, African Hut.

Cheap: Vientiane, Solly's, many of the Walker's Point Mexican restaurants.

127. The Q by me closed.
:(

Scott M. expanded too fast, and the 'stallis location was the more profitable of the two. It's still open and likely not going anywhere soon.

Oh, and in other McGlinchy news: Heaven City is nowhere near as good without Scott at the helm, from what I heard.

Noodle House is better than Vientiane for non-pho stuff, and for when you've got a small whiny child with you, and but I do like Vientiane's pho better.

Otherwise, I'd agree with your selections (never been to Solly's though). I'd add Safehouse if I was recommending a restaurant to people who like gimmicky places (it is kinda neat the first time; food's crapola bar fare), and I'd recommend Sabor (where I've also never been) to someone who was likely to take me and pay.

I'd also like to add Palomino in Bay View to the list (good vegan -- and not vegan -- bar food), and Emperor of China on Brady.

125. West LA: The Apple Pan
Counter service only. Expect to wait. Waitstaff have been there forever and aren't particularly friendly. But, for a tasty burger, fries, coke, and apple pie, you can't beat it. Their motto: "Quality Forever."

135. More nostalgia than good food, to me.
but ... I wouldn't go out for burgers, usually.

I like some of the Mexican restaurants along Pico much better.

126. Mimi's quality varies widely by location.
The one near me in Thousand Oaks, CA doesn't know how to make food taste like anything other than cardboard. The chefs in Tucson must know what they're doing.

134. Yum Mexican! Ironically I spent 6 days/5 nights in Tucson
in 1999 with no Mexican food!!!

I was there for a conference and stayed at the Westward Look Inn. Loved the hotel, a 4 star sort of place and my balcony overlooked all sorts of desert stuff. Really cool, but it was away some from the city and I would have had to take a taxi to find a place. I didn't want to do it alone so I just ate the hotel :-(

If I am ever in Tucson again, I'll take note of those places. I LOVE Mexican food~ the hotter, the better. Yum! :9

PS~ I wish I could suggest something up here other then the usual Clams and Lobstah, but I can't think of a thing people might like here. I'm from "away" and it took me forever to get used to the bland stuff served up here. I may get :spank: for this but it's true. :yoiks:
