HAH! I just got a song on the radio! HAH! HAH!
I called up the local classic rock station, out of boredom, and got through on the third try (transcription to the best of my memory):

"Hi, this is Frank 107.5 FM..."
"Hi, I was wondering if I could get some Steely Dan on sometime this afternoon?"
"Ah, yes, Steely Dan...great guys..."
"Yes..."
"Any particular song you wanted?"
"Well, I really like 'Reelin' in the Years'..."
"Yes, that's great....Steely Dan is touring with Michael McDonald this summer..."
"I had heard that..."
"They're coming to Massachusetts..."
"To Boston, yes...."
"Yes, and you can get all the information on our website, 1075frank.com."
"Yes, of course...."
"Who is this for?"
"{WIMR}"
"And where are you from?"
"{My town}"
"Well, thanks for calling, {WIMR}, and we'll be sure to get that on for you soon!"
"Thanks very much!"

They got it on about 1/2 hour later...I was not recorded, apparently, and they actually played "Do It Again" instead of "Reelin' in the Years," but that's cool with me. After they played it, they namechecked it: "And that there was some classic Steely Dan for {WIMR} in {my town}."

:D :D

2. The Dan and McDonald: The "Mixed Blessing" tour
Love the Dan, hate McDonald (except for his backing vocals on "Peg" and various Christopher Cross tunes).

3. I don't hate McDonald....

But the 'Dan is SO (x1000) much cooler.

I agree, though: McDonald's backing vocals on "Peg"--and on another tune from Aja, to which I happen to be listening right now (:D), "I got the News"--are really cool. He did good work with Fagen/Becker.

;)

On Edit: Sorry, Don, can't spell your last name....

4. He's got one of THOSE voices.
You know, the kind you recognize in an instant, like Jon Anderson.

5. Definitely.
I think that Fagen, also, has an extremely distinctive voice--very sardonic, almost strangled. :D

6. Got some news for ya, kid
If it was a commercial radio station, chances are they already had a SD tune in the rotation. It was going to be played whether you requested it or not.

I had a friend who interned at the local AOR/Classic Rock mothership back in the 80s, and it was the same then. They'd take your "request", and announce your name whenever they played a song by the requested artist.

Most commercial radio stations are programmed by one or two companies, which produce their playlists based on market research. Stations are strictly programmed, and the jocks must adhere to the playlists. If they don't they risk termination and/or blackballing from the industry.

The only "free-form" radio left in the country is at a few college and non-commercial stations where the DJs are allowed to program their own sets, and the station is just not a training apparatus for the broadcast journalism department.

But it's still cool that they said your name, though! :D
