Archaeologists Say Figs Were First Domestic Crop (11,000 Years Ago)
<snip>

WASHINGTON -- To many people, figs are more of a curiosity than a food like familiar fruits such as apples and oranges.

Archaeologists are revealing evidence that fig trees grew more than 11,000 years ago.

That would make figs the earliest domesticated crop, putting them about 1,000 years ahead of wheat and barley.

Remains of the figs were discovered in an ancient Mideast village, north of ancient Jericho. Experts believe they'd been dried for people to eat.

The researchers' study appears in the journal Science.
