there was a band called Animal Time, from Atlanta or thereabouts. The band consisted of two people: a drummer who sang, and his brother who played Chapman stick. And the two of them made enough noise to constitute a working band, at least as evidenced by their 7 song mini-album. (This was back in the days of vinyl.)
They made another record, a full length LP, which wasn't as much fun: they got a standard guitar to supplement the stick, and another drummer so the original guy could just stand up front and sing. I also think the songs were weaker, but some of my disenchantment is the inefficiency of four people doing what two people used to.
Also there used to be a local band up here in Boston called Common Ailments of Maturity with a stick player instead of bass guitar.
I play bass myself. I've tried the stick, but I don't have the independence of hands to do it right.

12. The trio really is the best way to showcase talent, IMO... |

under normal circumstances, but with a stick you only need a duo.
Did you watch the second video? I'm such a juvenile delinquent.

Her hip motion was slinky enough that the boob was just frosting on the cake.
Nice band too, although it's obvious he's been standing next to Robert Fripp for 20 years.
Generally I like quartets. I play bass in a trio, and although I feel like I have all the harmonic freedom I could ever want, I'm still constrained in (a) my rhythmic strategies-- I still have to collaborate with the drummer in maintaining the context for Tim to solo over-- and (b) my part of the spectrum; I can't go too far up the neck without impinging on Tim's territory. With one other instrument in the band I could offload some of those chores and go further out. Or I could learn to play stick properly and "speak" with two voices at once, except I don't think I'm smart enough. (Or Tim could get good enough that I'd feel privileged to play with him, which is even less likely...)
Cream could get away with the trio configuration, but Blue Cheer and Grand Funk were way too lame. And Soft Boys were considerably better than Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians.

It's like 2 instruments in one. A bass guitar and a six string. I've never seen anything like it.
