Most underappreciated rock & roll band ever?
My vote is The Hooters. See for yourself:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF1VXxY4DtI&search=satellite%20Hooters

No, "Hooter" isn't a referral to breastage. It's a musical instrument that you'll see in the video.

Randy California. I beat you to it.

92. Sorry
but you're wrong. Quicksilver's guitar player was John Cippolina.

Randy California played guitar with the group Spirit, who also deserve mention in this thread, and wrote their hit "I Got a Line on You."

The one thing I want to see at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame is Cippolina's Gibson SG guitar, which he customized himself, and his homemade bi-amped speaker stack.

And the first two Quicksilver albums are two of my favorite albums ever. "O God, pride of man, broken in the dust again!"

I love QMS! And in reference to your other post, Pride of Man is a fantastic song! As is Gold and Silver and pretty much all of the Happy Trails album. Their full-length Who Do you Love is fantastic!

And here I was going to be a smartass an mention Norman Greenbaum...

13. I've seen 'em in concert probably a dozen times. Never fail to
put on a kick-ass show, with the whole crowd singing along. Nowadays, it's fun to see the old geezers like me with their kids at the show, everyone singing along to "Surrender" and "Dream Police" and "I Want You to Want Me."

48. I'll have to check them out more
From what I have heard, the bands are a bit different (with Cheap Trick having a bit more punk/metal influence) - but Big Star was a power pop originator. Great bands.

The Replacements are also very overlooked - they influenced the Goo Goo Dolls.

I think the great 3 of Blondie, The Bangles, and Go Gos get the praise they deserve.

Their only big hit "Never Been Any Reason" is probably the only song most people have heard but they had a lot of great music from most of their albums when the original band with John Schlitt as the lead vocalist.
If you are a classic rock fan and you can find a copy of "Head East Live" you won't be disappointed.

Leslie West was seriously underappreciated as a powerful lead guitarist, Felix Pappalardi was exceptionally talented with catchy bass riffs, and Corky Laing was a real driving force with his drumming.

Spirit would probably be my second choice. "The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" was a groundbreaking album in its time.

27. Yes
that band, in almost all of its incarnations, has had some of the most talented people in music ever.

Steve Howe was Guitar Magazine's Player of the year for something like 5 years in a row (and this was during Clapton's Hey-Day)

Chris Squire is an amazing bassist

Rick Wakeman

Jon Anderson is famous for his spiritual lyrics and strong voice

Both Bill Bruford and Alan White have played drums (not too shabby)

without a doubt, these guys don't get the credit they deserve.

34. I agree there. Some people don't get it.
Once I was talking to the guy that turned me on to Pavement. I told him I thought their music was really beautiful. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about! He couldn't hear what I heard I guess.

I don't know a lot about the band but I have 2 of their records. Both are amazing. I can hear it in my head right now. The singers voice....you have to really understand a voice like that. It's not easy to go out there like he does. He's gifted with a looseness that allows him to do things with his voice that I don't think I've ever heard anyone else accomplish.

Here we go:

Pigs, they tend to wiggle when they walk
the infrastructure rots
and the owners hate the jocks
with their agents and their dates

if the signatures are checked
you'll just have to wait

and we're counting up the instants that we save
tired nation so depraved
from the cheap seats see us
wave to the camera
it took a giant ramrod
to raze the demon settlement

but high-ho silver, ride
high-ho silver, ride

take another ride to see me home
listen to me! i'm on the stereo stereo
oh my baby baby baby baby babe
gave me malaria hysteria

what about the voice of geddy lee
how did it get so high?
i wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?
(i know him and he does!)

and you're my fact-checkin' cuz
(Aww...)

well focus on the quasar in the mist
the kaiser has a cyst
and i'm a blank want list
the qualms you have and if they stick
they will drown you in a crick
in the neck of a woods
that was populated by
tired nation on the fly
everybody knows advice
that was give out for free
lots of details to discern
lots of details

but high-ho silver ride
high-ho silver ride
takes another ride to make me
oh, get off the air
i'm on the stereo stereo

The Band and The Allmans.

All three produced, I would argue about 10 (give or take), tunes that are as good as anything ever done by anybody.

What seperates them from more recognized bands, IMO, is the volume of "great hits".

Nothing but solid, rocking albums since the mid-90s (I'll ignore the "Pretty Together" album for the sake of my argument) from the Great White North, but the Canadian bands the US hears are Our Lady Peace and Nickelback?!! That's reason enough for stronger borders up north.

96. As an alternative to Amazon, you might want to check out this site:
http://www.yourmusic.com/enroll/enroll_200507.html

My only beef with them is their limited selection, but I'm sure you'll find a lot of CD's you want there, for $6 each, including shipping.

You can save even more by downloading stuff, if you can do without the actual CD's.

56. Mission Of Burma comes to mind...
But I don't really know how appreciated they were back in the day.

68. Great choice! TOTALLY underappreciated back in the day...
They're actually getting much more respect these days. Check it out:

62. Helmet, Killing Joke and The Melvins.
How many thousands upon thousands of modern heavy bands owe their sound and existence to these three groups?

90. I saw Helmet live many moons ago,
They were amazing, one of the tightest bands that I have ever seen. Sounding like a damn machine. Love Killing Joke too.

64. Simple Minds
At least 12 albums (I lost count), and great songs.

They've been cursed with the Blue Oyster Syndrome. You know, hundreds of songs, and the only one the radio plays is "Don't you forget about me"... which isn't even their best!

67. Husker Du!
Granted (ha ha, I made a Grant pun), they've gotten their fair share of praise in indie/underground music tomes, but considering they are almost directly responsible for how most alternative/post-punk music that followed sounds (Pixies, Nirvana, etc), I feel that they're still criminally underrated.

69. Many evenings with the Hooters live as background music
They used to play the Ambler Cabaret, and I remember being annoyed because you couldn't hear the conversation over their playing. Also heard them down at the shore occasionally.

I used to think Robert Hazard had it in him to be great, but he never really broker through.

Do you remember Nanette Mancini and Johnny's Dance Band? They were from the same era, and we used to see them at the same places that the Hooters and Robert Hazard played.

81. That band sounds familiar...I left PA in 1980, and only caught on to the
Hooters because a brother of my sister-in-law worked for them.

'Course, in the 1980s, I went back to visit PA much more frequently than I do now.

75. Here's Mine
The Smiths - the greatest band of all time yet they were little more than underground favourites. At least in North America.

The Jazz Butcher - Witty, sometimes hilarious lyrics. They were also very, very good musicians. David J. from Bauhaus/Love & Rockets played with them on a few albums. i think the Jazz Butcher needs it's own thread.

54-40 - Great band! Never really got much attention outside of Canada. It took Hootie & The Blowfish to cover one of their songs in order for them to get played in the U.S.

Probably a stretch for most underappreciated band ever, but definitely underappreciated, so I'll add them to this list.

91. OMG, how could I forget this one until now? GUIDED BY VOICES
Bob Pollard, IMO, is the best songwriter of all time. I listen to some GBV songs and think, "How was this NOT a #1 song?" Too much of this world doesn't even know what it missed.
