How much could I make an hour as a pizza delivery driver?
I am getting desperate here. Finally managed to get a part-time, $13/hr position in a library, for the summer, but I need to make another $800 a month to just get by. Have a masters, can't find a job. Can't even get a waitressing job (no, I haven't been putting my MA on my applications).

My mother is loaning me the money for the rent this month. I turn 27 this week. Still waiting for a "break" to "get my foot in the door". Don't have the body for stripping anymore.

Any ideas?

1. Well ...
I've never been a delivery driver, so I'm somewhat talking out of my behind here, but I've heard that they actually pull in a decent paycheck.

I believe that they have to foot their own gas bill though, so that may dig into the income somewhat.

5. Some get milage reimbursement.
Believe me, I've been thinking about it lately too.

I can use the extra money right now. I need to buy school clothes for my daughter in a month or so.

2. Check with your insurance first.
Most won't cover any accident that happens "on the job" unless you buy addtl. coverage.

3. I delivered pizzas back in 1987
I think, including tips, I was pulling in around 13 an hour. YMMV.

I think I was making like $5.50 from the pizza shop + 18 cents a mile, plus tips.

4. Theoretically, an infinite amount.
Realistically, I don't know. I can't imagine that it would pay more than a safer, more sane job.

6. I made astonishingly good money when I delivered pizza.
It helps to go for a place that gives you mileage compensation. Papa John's used to, though I haven't done that job in many, many years, so I couldn't steer you towards anyplace in particular.

8. I've heard that they still do,
as do many sandwich shops.

I've also heard from delivery drivers that the best tips are from places that deliver Chinese, Italian, etc over pizza and subs. They've said that they get a couple of dollars for pizza but they'll receive five or ten for the same amount if it's Chinese.

7. Check out each place first.
You might have to increase your insurance rates.

Some places are adding anywhere near a $1-5 surcharge now on delivery but I don't know how much of that goes to the driver. In my town it's an average of $6 an hour. You have to keep track of your milage and they reimburse you about .35 a mile.

I've met a few college kids in my area who are drivers. They bring home about $350 a week before taxes.

9. I have friends who deliver pizzas for extra money.
They say that they make fairly good money considering that they are working in food service, but with the recent gas prices not all places are willing to recoup like they used to.

I would say that if you are looking for a part-time for some decent money you should keep plugging away with the server apps. Maybe you could try bar tending?

10. Yeah. You could probably pull in another $200/week that way

Depending on where you're delivering you might have to work more hours to get there. I did it in college delivering to mostly students. Most students were not great tippers, but it seemed like almost every night I did get asked "hey, you wanna hit this?" in lieu of a tip. In any case, that's probably not a very good side benefit if you're actively searching for a full-time job that might or might not require drug testing.

11. Lots of places start folks at minimum wage, so depending on
where you live, it could be the federal minimum wage, or like here in Washington, it's over $7.00 an hour. You sometimes get a trip cost also (25 cents or so). And there are tips, but don't hold your breath for very big ones, and often people don't tip at all.

I'm a vocational counselor, and just did a labor market survey for Pizza Delivery Driver, so this info is fresh. Also, my husband used to do that as a part time job to help pay off his student loans. One thing to keep in mind is that, depending on where the delivery area my be, it might not be very safe. My husband was confronted by jerks more than once (not the folk he was delivering too, but people who lived in the apartment complexes he delivered to), and he is a big guy, but that didn't stop people from getting in his face sometimes.

14. When I was in college I made good money delivering pizzas and subs
until I got a bartending job in the last 2-3 years of my undergrad career. Each had its plusses and minuses, but all in all I'd say considering job stress/money pizza delivery wins, even though I made more bartending.

All that aside, I have seen your pictures in previous posts, and although it doesn't seem fair, attractive women tend to make lots more money than men if you can land a bartending job.

15. I've never done this, since I hate to drive, but my friend did.
He said that he was able to make more money delivering pizza for Dominos than as a rehab alcohol counselor, his previous job, which he preferred. My cousin also did this as a second job, for Dominoes, until recently, and he's over 40. I would imagine that how much you make would depend on the tips that you get. And I'd think that this would depend on the neighborhoods that you deliver to and that being female might work in your favor. Good luck with this. I know it's tough out there.:-(

16. You should try
being a delivery driver for a flower shop, I did this and they provide the vehicle, gas and your covered under their car insurance (So if your in a accident it has no affect on your own coverage).
