6. Oh, fuck, that thing scared the bejeebers out of me.
I thought I was about to die. Weirdest theme park experience ever.

8. Viper?

That thing is like twenty years old. Great in its day and not a bad looper design by Arrow but just kinda blah. Now, Déjà Vu is a pretty scary ride, especially if you are lucky enough to draw first row. But my favorite at SFMM is Goliath. Yeah, it doesn't have any inversions but you are only held in via a lap bar. Gobs of air and a speed of 85 mph.

Yes, timber84, i think they still have the free fall ride, but it's lame. You're talking about the one where there are are four of you in a cage? Modern free fall rides are towers with a dozen or more riders facing outwards from the tower, held by nothing more than an over-the-shoulder restraint. The best of these is the Big Shot on top of the Strat in Las Vegas.

Heck, my local park, Silverwood just added a 140' drop tower this year. Best amusement park in the pacific NW:

18. I agree about DejaVu
It took me so long to get myself together after riding that one...and I'm an adrenaline junkie (going skydiving in September). I was walking across the park telling my boyfriend, "I just don't feel quite right," and my boyfriend was like, "Neither do I." LOL.

X is pretty cool too, though. I had a few moments of sheer terror on that one too though because I felt I was going to fall out the seat.

28. The thing about Déjà Vu (and also X to a lesser extent)
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 04:10 AM by pokerfan
Is I really don't appreciate rides where the restraints are a necessity instead of a back-up safety system. On Vu, it's a bit of a shock after going through the butterfly and loop backwards to go flying backwards up the starting tower only to stop and fall into your harness, your harness being the only thing between you and a couple hundred feet of air.

It is my belief that safety harnesses should be backups instead of being integral to surviving the ride.

That said, can someone please remove the OTSR from Revolutions and return that ride to the way Schwarzkopf (not that Schwarzkopf) designed it and the way it appeared in national Lampoon's Vacation?

Ninja is another favorite of mine. It reminds me of the skycycle chase through the woods in the third Star Wars film.

Colossus has been tamed. Used to be great but they removed the camel hump and added some unecessary trim brakes.

31. The worst part for me is the very beginning
Just hanging there with your arms and legs dangling towards the ground and then basically just falling through the air on the way down because your body is touching neither the seat nor the harness.

I know what you mean though about the harnesses being the only safety device. It is a very unsettling feeling but I guess they do that on purpose to add to the effect of the ride.

5. The one with the loops and the upside down part..
LOL!

When I was a kid I was scared of Space Mountain. That's it though. I am scared of roller coasters that are unsafe (i.e. rickity, shaky, bolts falling off)

13. I hated the Shockwave.
Too jerky. Always gave me a headache. Glad it's gone...

Riding Batman from the front row was cool, but it was during the day. :-)

12. Rode Goliath at Magic Mountain on my 50th birthday weekend
a few years ago. It was definitely the scariest roller coaster I had been on, but then I rode it a second time that day :-).

We bought the photo from the first ride and I don't look so terrified. I am grinning from ear to ear, but as my husband points out, I also had my eyes closed.

Now relocated to six flags. 93 foot drop, seemed a little "shaky" at the time (1984).

Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 11:37 AM by TommyO
and very few coasters truly scare me, however a wild mouse definitely falls into that category - it's the high hairpin turns that get me every time. Of course, I ride them, I just hold on tightly during that section of the ride.

When riding Top Thrill Dragster or Millennium Force at Cedar Point, it's hands up all the way (though you can't start TTD with your hands up, raise them during the launch.)

Edited to include this link to a great Roller Coaster Database: http://www.rcdb.com/

hanging coaster, with loops. broke often, got stuck a lot, people got hurt:

The Bat Suspended Coaster, Kings Island

The Bat, the world's first suspended roller coaster from Arrow Dynamics opened at Kings Island in April 1981 and closed a short two years later. The coaster failed due to a number of serious design flaws.

The Great White is an inverted coaster, so I'd give it the edge.
