I really hate to kill the little guys, but I don't like them swarming all over my food preparation areas either.
Peppermint (the plant) and peppermint oil/extract make a relatively good repellant as well.

(I realize the o.p. is about INSIDE the house.) As much as I grok the equality of ALL living things, it is SHOCKING to see an army of leafcutters lay waste to plants. One morning you walk outside and find plants bare, sometimes with green, freshly cut leaves down around the base if the ants were interrupted at their job.

takes a while but the whole nest is destroyed. I forget the exact amounts to use but I found it through the co-op extension program. If you do a search I am sure you can come up the formula.
