and the social dynamics of any group of people tend to be similar (ie tendency to seek in-group uniformity of thought and to ostracise those who deviate, et cetera)...be easier for the OP to say 'I hate it when humans act like humans'.

9. I agree. I've always been very against hate and violence. |
|
I have maintained that love is a much better path to take then hate. That we should always try to understand and sypmathize with those who we dislike, instead of attacking them or using hate as a shield. It's abject hate and violent attitudes that have bothered me everywhere, on DU and elsewhere, simply because it doesn't have to be that way. But alas, humans will be humans :(

21. Perhaps it is a matter of nomenclature, wording. |
|
One does not "hate" Rachel Ray or Tom Cruise; one hates the phenomenon of their fame and success. One hates those attributes of our culture which result in the elevation of such people.
Its not personal animosity against another human being, its directed against an "ideal" in the platonic sense, but in this case a negative ideal, its like hating injustice, hating suffering, hating disease, hating ignorance.

36. Bull--weak ass rationalization. |
|
That's like the Republicans who claim they don't hate gays, they just hate the "sin." If someone despises the phenomena of popular entertainers, they can darn well say that without some of the Freeper-esque hate-fest language directed at specific people around here. And further, the whole idea of hating the "attributes of our culture which result in the elevation of such] people" is disturbing in itself. Many people like Tom Cruise, or Rachel Ray, or Britney Spears, or any other object of the daily DU two minute hates. The hate-fests devalue them, too, for their likes and dislikes.
Democratic principle is about equality, not all this elitist nonsense.

42. But people are not equal, they just have equal rights under law. |
|
Democratic principles are that all people are equal in the eyes of the law, not that all people are actually equal. Thats nonsense, that all people are actually equal. Thats true only at the special olympics, where everyone gets a juicebox and a medal for trying.
Thats why its crazy to think all people should go to college. The world does indeed need ditchdiggers too. Egalitarianism merely requires that the equal worth and equal entitlement to respect and dignity of ditchdiggers be recognized.
Trash culture is trash, and I don't have to respect it. Thats not a "democratic ideal," that people are not allowed to have varying degrees of intelligence, education, taste, and sophistication. Thats something the levellers believed, they would have torn down society to the lowest common denominator, thank god they failed.

68. Even if true, that has nothing to do with my post |
|
I never said some people aren't faster or more musically gifted. What I'm saying is that if you insult everyone who likes, say, Pirates of the Caribbean because it is light and fluffy, you are not respecting the criteria which others use to judge films. You are claiming that only your vision of entertainment/art is valid. Someone whose specialty in life is electrical engineering may have never cared one way or the other whether Johnny Depp's style of affectation acting is more or less sophisticated than Tom Cruise's style of method acting. Trashing said EE (or mechanic, plumber, whatever) for having a different standard than yours for entertainment is elitest.
That's not to say one can't judge artists of all types by objective standards--that's one reason so many awards shows exist. There's a point when someone crosses from honoring artistic talent to trashing anyone different from themselves. That's what I'm talking about.
And it does take talent to produce or direct or perform a popular work of art. A different type of talent, but still a talent. Not everyone can do what, say, the Beach Boys or Britney Spears do, even if their talents and skills in music aren't exceptional.
As for the rest of your article, obviously everyone would agree with it, but that isn't what I was saying. One of my favorite quotes from some clever quipper I've forgotten (I think Menken, but not sure): A nation that values average philosophers over great plumbers will produce neither great philosophy nor great plumbing.

25. You know where I noticed it the most? NO, not the Ken Lay threads! |
|
In the "what do you hate most about the grocery store?" thread. So very many people seem to have little to no tolerance for other human beings on the planet, just trying to live and grocery shop, for heaven's sake. I live in a city and I am used to being surrounded by other people, their sounds, their smells, their close proximity to me. Yet so many DUers think nothing of spewing their hatred of other shoppers because they *gasp* BLOCKED THE AISLE with their shopping carts! Goodness, are you delivering a baby? Because otherwise do you really need the 5 seconds it will take for the person to realize you are behind them and move out of the way? What about waiting patiently, with maybe a gentle throat clear if they are unaware, and then smiling and saying excuse me when they move? What if we all treated each other like potential friends instead of automatic combatants?
I don't know, it just really surprised me...

If you mean to tell me that you don't get annoyed by other people while you're trying to do an already unpleasurable chore, you win the Saint of the Year award. Expressing that frustration has little to do with intolerance. It's not like any of us were seriously wishing those people would die or anything, nor would we reject their friendship if we actually got to know them based upon their lack of supermarket etiquette. Methinks you're a wee bit sensitive.

And, I grew up in farm country, so I also think it's STUPID! Corn doesn't need to breathe, like certain types of wine... it can actually mess up the flavor of the corn.
But I still hate it more when Rachel Ray says, "EVOO, EXtra Virgin Olive Oil."

It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately - not just in the context of the supermarket. How people can't seem to live and let live - how rude everyone has gotten lately. I am no shrinking violet - I'm brash and loud, believe me. But I really feel that living in a city (Philly) has made me immune to some of the petty and overly nasty annoyances posted on that thread - like, for christ's sake people! Someone is in your way for 2 minutes? They are taking up space on the planet, just as you are.
And no, I don't find grocery shopping unpleasant, much less intolerable. In fact, I posted on that thread that I genuinely enjoy it - and one of the reasons I enjoy it is being out in society and smiling at strangers and exchanging pleasantries over the produce.
