Another puzzle
This one is a classic and one of my favs.

Three friends check into a bed and breakfast for a night, the clerk tells them that their bill for the night will be $30. They split the bill evenly, paying $10 each, then go to their room for the night. A few minutes later the clerk realises that she's made a mistake and charged the friends $5 too much. So she sends up her son to pay the $5 back to them. Knowing the three friends would have trouble splitting $5 evenly between them the boy decides to say that there was a mistake of $3 (giving the friends $1 back each) and to pocket the other $2. With the $1 off the friends paid $9 each, totalling $27, plus the $2 that the boy stole it comes to $29, but they originally paid $30. Where did the other dollar go?

5. well...
if they get back three dollars a piece....when the bill is 30 total...

their actually number is 28, not 27, multiplying by 3x9 isn't accurate, it should be 3x9.33, bring the total to 28.....because all of them paid 9.33 cents a piece...and the kid pockted the other two bucks, bringing it up to 30 dollars

7. Yeah, but they each got back a buck
from the ten they threw in.

So they are each in for $9, not $9.33.

6. My answer:
To the bed and breakfast because the three friends still paid too much. Each owed $8.33 but paid $9.00.

9. here i go again...they were suppose to split
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 03:25 AM by petersond
25 bucks evenly....but instead paid 30....

clerk sent kid up to pay back, 5 bucks...but instead, the kid gave back three, and kept two...25+5=30

on edit:to clarify...

3 guys had to pay 25, but they paid 30...

clerk sent kid up to pay back the 5 dollars to three guys...

kid kept two bucks, and paid back three...

25+3(that was paid back)+2 dollars that kid pocketed=30 dollars.

11. Good enough (and so was GloriaSmith)
The puzzle is designed to confuse. $27 + $2 doesn't equal $30.

Short answer is they paid $9 each for a total of $27.

The $27 was split between the mom and son: $25 + $2.
