Poll question: What's your birth order?
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 04:47 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
If you're a multiple...well, that's what the "other" option is for. :P

You may determine your birth order out of just "whole" siblings, you may include "halves" and "steps" if you like, you may consider just those siblings who you grew up around regardless of how they related to you, adoptees may consider either their birth families or their adopted families, what-fucking-ever. :) However, if yours is a situation that needs qualifying, please explain so in your reply.

Me, I'm an only. Simple. :)

On edit: Fascism removed from determination of birth order request. :) Thanks, Gormy.

(Hell, I couldn't live with one!)

My dad is the eldest of six. He and the youngest are the only truly sane people, IMHO, of the bunch. :)

How do you like your twin? It seems to me all the twins I know, admittedly aged 10-18 or 19, can't stand one another!

As fraternal as fraternal twins can be (ones of the same gender, that is...)

We get along okay and always had different friends and interests. Most people didn't even know we were related.

One thing I'd hate about the whole twin thing is having a mirror image of myself...Creepy! I'd much prefer to be opposite sex or like you--same sex, but don't look alike.

27 minutes, in my limited experience, is quite the gap--most twins I know were born within 5-15 minutes of each other.

8. Halves were born of or to a parent --- they should count regardless
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 04:35 PM by Gormy Cuss
of whether you lived with them consistently, if the answers are # born.

For that matter, how would you count adopted sibs? Sometimes sibs are old than you but not as old as other blood siblings -- what would be the birth order in that case?

WIMR, please reconsider your categorizations --- you've opened a hornet's nest. :hi:

Me, the birth order changes dramatically based on whether I count only those born to my mother, or only those related by blood, or those raised 'consistently' etc. The Brady Bunch had nothing on us.

How about I just say "Count people who you would consider siblings," and let people explain how they did it? Not so scientific, but less hornet-y.

:-)

Some birth order studies do account for birth order based on self description. I'm the first born of my parent's marriage, but way down the line otherwise so I qualify as a middle child in terms of the predicted characteristics.

41. you just made me think.
Our son is adopted, and I've already gotten used to thinking of him as the "oldest", even though we don't have any other kids yet. It's not out of the question that we could adopt a child older than he is in the future. There's a strict way to look at birth order, and then there's the date of the adoption, which is fuzzy of course, but at least to me, now, meaningful. Would he not still be the "oldest" in some sense?

More on which to think...

I was found on at police station, so the adoption agency had to *guess* my birthday. I'm only a couple months older than my sister (also adopted, and birthday also guessed), so perhaps in actuality *she's* the oldest? :-)

He was born 9/23/05. His birthparents signed the papers on 9/25 and 26, and the adoption was finalized in court on November 14th, 2005. We're going to try to go see them at the end of this month - they haven't seen him since the day before the finalization.

53. Wow. That's ROUGH.
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 05:21 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
My grandmother had 6 kids in 7 years, back in the late fifties to mid sixties, which is also rough. I think I know of someone who is the eldest of 7 kids, where there is a 10-year difference between him and the youngest, but if I remember correctly one or two of those seven were adopted, so it's not *quite* the same.

71. I was mostly spared that as a result of too great an age difference.
They range from 5 to 13 1/2 years older than me.

63. My dear WIMR!
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 05:34 PM by CaliforniaPeggy
I am the oldest; I have a younger brother......he is two years younger than I am......

But.....saying that.....I am not a typical oldest child.

I discovered several years ago, that I behave more like a second child would.

When the oldest has severe conflicts with the parents, then that child often behaves much the way a second-born child would.

And I did have severe conflicts with them....although now we have worked things out, and we get along very well. At least as long as I don't visit them!

I know, I'm unique.....but what else is new? (Thanks, WIMR!)

89. He likes deathcore and speed metal.
When he was a teenager, he and a few of his friends were in a "band" called Bacteria. Their one and only album was titled "Vomit Your Anus", the cover of which was a pen-and-ink facsimile of a guy doing just that, drawn by the enormously artistically talented yet irredemably macabre bassist, who, among other endeavors, tattooed a "sleeve" on his left arm (he is right-handed). One of the tattoos very plainly said "Mutants Fuck Humans" in inch-high letters.

106. Last of 5
14 yrs difference between my oldest sister and me, and 5 between my next oldest sibling and myself.

The aforementioned sister had a child at 18, so I was already an aunt at 4 years of age.

I'm the late child of a late child, so my grandparents were 83 and 88 when I was born - and sadly, both died that year.

I'll be turning 40 this year, and my oldest first cousin is 88.

I have a weird family.

111. I'm the second of four
which sounds like a Borg collective name <snerk>

One older sister and two younger brothers. I am closest (emotionally) to my youngest brother. Probably because he is quite a bit younger than I. I looked after him a lot when he was growing up. Changed his diaper, went to his school recitals, was his "Beaver Leader" (youngest age group for the Boy Scouts of Canada)... yes, I know, most unfortunate name to be applied to a teenaged girl. What can ya do? He's now 40, married with a kid. I dote on him, his wife and their daughter. My other brother and his kid? Not so much.

My mother, otoh, was one of 11. Only 3 left now. And my mum is 82. The youngest in her group is still alive. My aunt must be in her mid '70s by now.

It has it good and bad points about it.

I had more things then the older children but they grew up together.

I would have liked to have a brother or sister close to my age, all I had was a cousin that was a year younger.

that the majority of people who posted in this thread were only or first borns (adding the two together at this point is 70, which is more than all of the other options added together).

130. Despite my occasional bitterness about how much I sacrificed
and was forced to sacrifice for my largely ingrateful and oblivious younger sister, I'm happy to be a first born. Effective life management skills, empathy, familiarity with the concept of sharing--there's a reason many first borns are the most successful.
