3. As you wish...
Edited on Fri Jul-07-06 06:31 PM by everythingsxen
I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did. It's your father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or as random as a blaster, but an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire. - Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I met you I was but the learner. Now, *I* am the master. - Darth Vader, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

This is technically not "a quote" but a scene, one of my favorites in all the Star Wars films:

Darth Vader has just learned of Admiral Ozzel's big blunder, and activates a viewscreen
Admiral Ozzel: Lord Vader, the fleet has moved out of lightspeed and we're preparing to...
Ozzel stops, and suddenly begins to choke, clutching at his throat
Darth Vader: You have failed me for the last time, Admiral. Captain Piett?
Captain Piett: Yes, my lord?
Darth Vader: Make ready to land our troops beyond their energy field, and deploy the fleet, so that nothing gets off the system.
beside Piett, Admiral Ozzel utters one last strangled gasp, and falls over dead
Darth Vader: You are in command now, Admiral Piett.
Admiral Piett: Thank you, Lord Vader.

It's horrible, but it is a damn cool quote.....

A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic. - Joseph Stalin

That's some cold shit to say to a muthafucka before you pop a cap in his ass.

Or is that Ezekial 25:17...

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of life and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

64. From Robert M. Price:
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 10:34 AM by Benfea
"Nor is 'naturalism' the issue when the historian employs the principle of analogy. As F.H. Bradley showed in The Presuppositions of Critical History, no historical inference is possible unless the historian assumes a basic analogy of past experience with present. If we do not grant this, nothing will seem amiss in believing reports that A turned into a werewolf or that B changed lead into gold. 'Hey, just because we don't see it happening today doesn't prove it never did!' One could as easily accept the historicity of Jack and the Beanstalk on the same basis, as long as one's sole criterion of historical probability is 'anything goes!'"

you may be assured it will contain nothing but their novels."

Oscar Wilde.

Contains some America-bashing, but has the virtue of being funny.

71. Two Favorites from T.S. Eliot, and Eisenhower
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.
-T.S. Eliot

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."
-Dwight D. Eisenhower

76. Gotta disagree with Twain on the second one.
The French have a much more sensible attitude about swear words: why add it to your language if people aren't supposed to use it? Consequently, they can exceed even the most colorful New York cabbie when it comes to ornamental swearing.

74. The Beatitudes

THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS

Jesus gave us the eight Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, recorded for all posterity in the Gospel of Matthew, the first Book of the New Testament. Jesus offers us a way of life that promises eternity in the Kingdom of Heaven.

THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Gospel of Matthew 5:3-10

I don't read the Bible. I go to Mass occasionally. But this is one excerpt from the New Testament that has always spoken to me. It was read as the Gospel at my wedding Mass which took place 22 years ago. I think it embodies the essence of our progressive values.

75. Some great Native American quotes
Crowfoot talking about life:

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."

Blackhawk on the taking of land and the given justification for doing so (very apropos quote for today):

"How smooth must be the language of the whites, when they can make right look like wrong, and wrong like right."

Chief Aupumut on death:

"When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home."

Sogoyewapha on Western Religions:

"Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agreed, as you can all read the Book?"
