Well...for a week or so anyway.
She is adorable! To make a long story short...or perhaps not:
This week my husband and I had been talking about getting my dad a kitten to cheer him up while he recuperates. He loves our cat Merlin and is an animal lover in general, but would never get a cat unless it walked right up to his door.
Yesterday I was going through my email and saw a Freecycle email about 5 little kittens who needed homes. Three were black long hairs, one gray and white, and one a tortie. They had been born in a shed at a woman's cottage and the Mama cat wasn't real thrilled about caring for them.
Yesterday, also, my father took the children with his friend to the beach on Lake Huron. While there, my father "decided" he would get a hermit crab for my son. (Freaky looking little things they are, but rather fun to watch). My son was ecstatic with his new pet. He came with a painted race car shell, so my son named him "Jeff" (ala Jeff Gordon)...Feel free to stop here if I'm boring you.
Last night, I came home to meet "Jeff"...crawling on my kitchen table *** scritch, scratch**** !!!shivers!!! :scared: ---They kinda look like tarantulas--- at least to women who freak out over "creepy crawlies"...
Later, in bed, my husband puts his arms around me, nuzzles into my neck and says,"Paybacks are hell...go get the cat" (Sorry to anyone who thought it would get more exciting here)...
So, I went to look at the one remaining kitten today (actually, there were two) but one was too sick to leave just yet) and met the most wonderfully liberal woman. Big, beautiful house...with all kinds of wonderful "War is not good for..." paintings and lovely woodwork, awe inspiring furniture...and...CATS...7 cats in all... She does rescue and they are all wonderfully healthy and friendly. There was one dog, but she was rather aloof. quite like a cat in fact.
Our kitten (we must work on realizing it's Poppy's kitten) is a little black (with just a hint of tortie like brown) fluffball. She's got a roly poly tummy, is a little timid, but very curious, and a purring machine once she gets to know you. She has a bit of an eye infection and already has a vet appointment on Monday AM. She also has some bald spots where mats had to be cut out.
We took her to the pet shop and she is a natural born shopper, reaching out to pat and paw and sniffle at all the wonderful kitty type things. We bought all the "goods" for cat care, and a few catnip mice...and a catnip pillow for Merlin to soothe what are sure to be bruised feelings for a 14 year old only son. Oh yeah, and a jar of--get this-- hermit crab cookies (I'm not kidding) for "Jeff". Jessie lost out but Merlin complains that she always "gets all the good stuff" anyway.
And away we went, to pick up Poppy and give him his kitten.
Poppy? He loves her. He named her Licorice, after his favorite candy...and because my daughter said to. Me? I thought she should be named "Kitney". Get it? Kidney-"Kit"ney? Surgery and recovery and good news and all... MrG was all for the name "Payback" and/or "Bitch"...but that wouldn't be very nice, now would it?
And before I forget Merlin acted like she didn't even exist while Jessie sniffed the air and looked up at me curiously. For now Licorice lives in my daughter's room until she's given the all clear from the vets and can be socialized, the cat and dog appear no worse for wear...
...and we have yet to see what "Jeff" thinks of the cookies.
I'll post a picture when she wakes up. Right now she's made a nest out of my daughter's dirty clothes (teenager room of course) and is happily sleeping.
Today was so much fun.
Welcome Licorice to the DU Cat family. I'm sure she'll have lots to say. :hi:
And...here she is, mind you, she's a little bedraggled, but quickly winning our hearts:
