What are you listening to today? |
|
It's been a while since the last topic of this sort. I heard:
Big Star - #1 Record/Radio City (I was really missing out on classic music here - so glad I bought it. I'll give 4 put of 4 stars for an excellent CD, but it takes more for a CD to get 5/5, and both CDs here would.)
Alice Peacock - Who I Am (on full album listening party. There are some moments of Carole King-like sophistication, but much of the CD is too dull IMO)
That's all for today so far.

It's enjoyable IMO. Some of the live versions of her songs are even more enchanting than the originals.

15. I just downloaded his CD on iTunes - he is amazing! |
|
I bought Shake The Sheets. I would say he breathes new life into pop/punk for sure. It's certainly not one-dimensional. There's a bit of classic rock and even a little new wave. :hi:

7. Now I have R.E.M.'s Out Of Time on |
|
It's one of the somewhat rare times I disagree with reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine. He gives the CD only 2.5 stars at All Music Guide, and I'd give it at least 4.5 - maybe 5. "Losing My Religion," "New Wild Heaven," and "Shiny Happy People" are well worth buying the CD for alone. The production is also some of the best of all the R.E.M. albums. I think Monster is uneven and that the three newest R.E.M. CDs are more pretty than spectacular, though.

You and I have the same taste in music - this one's fantastic. Here's a sample (if possible, just listen without watching the stupid video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BOBZ8BZAt0&search=mojave%203Smart yet simple, hopeful while recognizing that there's little reason for hope... I just love it.

It's not far removed from the Neil Finn stuff we both love. Also was in the vein of the Jayhawks and The Thrills. My wish list is getting filled with CDs to get (out now and future releases,) but I'll put their CD on.

Puzzles Like You. I'll buy it when I get the chance.
Even when I don't like an artist, like with Art Brut and the new stuff from Jennifer O'Connor, the fun is in trying new stuff out.

20. Mad Season- "Long Gone Day" |
|
Perfect for my mood these days.
Mad Season- Above- Long Gone Day
So much blood I'm starting to drown Runs from cold to colder Time to time the sky's come down To help me lose my way Tears and lies for answers You and open veins, God knows I'm gone Girl I just want you to Come on down Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall These sins are mine and I've done wrong, oh babe Come on down
Long Gone Day Mmmm, who ever said We wash away with the rain
See you all from time to time Isn't it so strange How far away we all are now Am I the only one who remembers that summer Oh, I remember Everyday each time the place was saved The music that we made The wind has carried all of that away
Long gone day Mmmm, who ever said We wash away with the rain
So many tears I'm starting to drown The rain in heaven's all come down Silver spoons affix the crown The luckless ones are broken Fears and lies for answers You and open flames God knows I'm gone And I just want you to Come on down, hmmm
Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall These sins are mine and I've done wrong I want you to, oh, I just want you to Come on down
I fear again, like then, I've lost my way And shout to God to bring my sunny day

27. One more kick, since this ties into my other post here |
|
I've heard all of these since last time:
Ingrid Michaelson - Girls And Boys (4 stars out of 4)
Cheyenne Kimball - The Day Has Come (3.5 stars out of 4 - while she's a little nasal, her voice is spirited and emotional. She avoids cliches in her writing, even though many of the songs are about familiar subjects. And there's a non-generic guitar style that doesn't try to be too eclectic for the sound. Aly & AJ have talent, but their style's a bit too much like Hilary Duff's for me to give above a B- to their CD. Cheyenne stands out more.)
Ted Leo - Shake The Sheets (4 stars out of 4)
Ane Brun - A Temporary Dive (I'll listen again, but it could be a 4. Her style is a bit western folk - very neat. Her voice is a bit like Ani DiFranco's. but less shrill.)
Thom Yorke - The Eraser (2.5 stars out of 4 - neither as wondrously experimental as Kid A or as well-structured as OK Computer. Still, the songs are mostly solid.)
And I heard the double Big Star album again (4 stars out of 4.)
I liked what I heard from the new Muse album, didn't like Art Brut, and liked Peaches more when she showed her rock side.
I bought these for future listening:
Some Girls - Crushing Love (sounds like an indie-pop gem! When I do like Julianna Hatfield, I think she's great.) Nina Gordon - Bleeding Heart Graffiti Joanna - This Crazy Life Leigh Nash - Blue on Blue
