Should I even bother with graphic design as a possible career? |
|
I have some dabblings, and my own niche I can exploit, but if everything's being offshored, why bother?

I am a Zapf-award winning GD, and I've seen a ton a of people who think they can do it (and their crappy, overworked unreadable resumes). They can't. They get jobs at copy places making $8/hr if they're lucky. Having a degree is no guarantee - getting a job doing the unglamorous work (layout, etc) and knowing the job is.

I am similarly trying to decide what to do about my career. I have a year left of undergrad (in sociology, talk about worthless in the job market) and plan on grad school, but there isn't any field I can come up with that I want to work in and have any skill in doing that seems to be hiring people. Trying to decide on a career plan that won't be outsourced or limited to part-time/contract/temporary/no benefits is like consulting a crystal ball. I'm almost at the point of just flipping a coin!
You might as well go for it...there's almost nothing anymore that's a guaranteed job field, so it's probably better to go for what you love and hope it will work out.
Or, hey, there's always Halliburton!
