22. You have to assume
That something had been said to him to make him react like that, even so it was one hell of an over-reaction.

When David Ginola made a poor back pass that led to a goal a number of years ago he was pretty much kicked out of French football, he never played for France again. What's going to happen to Zidane if they lose? Exile?

Taunting an opposition player into hitting back and getting sent off as a result is a standard tactic for some teams.

We'll likely learn what was said in subsequent days.

The reason I was rooting for Italy is because of my late grandfather, who was born to Italian immigrants. Based on the play in regulation time and overtime, I was hoping for the penalty kicks. It was Italy's best chance.

I don't care what Matterazzi said. A professional player just moves on and plays ball. Zidane has a history of violent outbursts like that. He even did it to a player from Saudi Arabia in the 1998 World Cup. It was EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL on his part.

There is no excuse for that - so his career ends up with this. It's horribly sad. I didn't care for France except that I had hoped he'd go out on top. Henry played amazingly. Ribéry played amazingly. So did Zidane - and then - tears.

No excuse for assault yet I still wonder what they said.

France STILL outplayed them in a big way.

84. Zidane is one of the greatest players EVER. It's sad he's leaving this way
They say revenge is a dish best served cold. Professional players (remember, these guys get paid a fortune) know how to keep their cool, and exact their revenge later on in the game by scoring points (or even with the "innocent" elbow to the face here and there). It's a pity that Zidane, one of the truly greatest players in the history of soccer, has to leave in such a shameful note.

82. It isn't that easy
Zidane is known to be very hot-tempered. It almost stopped his career on the youth level - he has an extremely short fuse. A few Italians are known to taunt their opponents, even using racial slurs. They knew Zidane was touchy, so they went against him.

That said, a pro can't react like that, it's unacceptable.

Buffon had very few ball contacts. Rule of thumb: you haven't outplayed the Italians, unless you managed to score. Or at least a few shots on target.

69. I agree - Italy played the best defense, France a most aggressive offense
Still, the referee annulled an offside goal that, IMHO, wasn't. Italy should have won with that second goal alone.

And let's not go into Zidane's little headbutting stunt. That was an embarrassment, an awful way to end a career.

FORZA AZURRIIIII!!!!!!

The French were the better team but soccer is a mean sport that break the better team's heart. Congrats to Italy who only had a couple of good games in the entire tournament. They advanced in the second round because the refs helped them and they had the easiest path to the semis.

55. Well done Italy
Considering the current problems in Serie A (the top Italian league) with massive corruption involving 4 of Europe's top clubs, what Italy have done is pretty remarkable. There are a few players who play for clubs that are going to be relegated at least one division and who are going to be looking for new clubs next week.

With all that hanging over them it's amazing that the players were able to hold their nerves to win on penalties.

58. Well done Italy, although I was pulling for France
The first 110 minutes of that final were great.

63. Congrats to Italy BUT
I was pulling for Italy in the final but I think France played better and Germany was the best team in the tournament. It sucks that the World Cup is tainted because it was decided on penalties.

This was a terrible World Cup. As bad as 1990 when most games were low scoring and decided in penalties.

On to South Africa 2010. I hope it will be a better tournament!

64. I'll raise my glass to that!
To see France dominate the game just to loose in PK's... I wasn't routing for France, but I'm devastated on the state that this game was played.

73. I was rooting for Italy..
..at the start of the game but they were so out-played that I changed my mind. Besides I really don't feel like they've faced the kind of competition that France did reaching the final and therefor deserve it more.

Zidane knew what he was doing. He must have figured it was worth it. Maybe the insult was to his kid or something. It was probably vile, but still... It's the freaking last minutes of the World Cup final, and your career, Zidane. Idiot doesn't cover it.
