Post an example of great casting
I think Uma Thurman as Venus was a great choice--Botticelli would have been pleased!

8. Most of the casting in that movie is great
Cate Blanchett isn't a very good Galadriel, as she looks a bit too worn and pinched in the face compared to the other elves and even the partially human elves like Arwen, but other than that I can't think of any bad choices.

I really liked the choice for Eowyn, she's pretty but sturdy enough to be a believable fighter.

Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 05:39 AM by Bombtrack
it's really dumb how someone from Westchester and someone who immigrated from Poland to America 60-whatever years ago both have these thick English accents in that movie. They're also both way older than the characters ever were presented as in the comics, and Magneto never looked even close to as feeble as McKellan.

seemed to grow more central as the trilogy's plot rolled on, I think, and he did very well conveying different strengths to Gandalf. Liv Tyler did passably well with an underwritten role, I think; at least she made me buy into her love for Viggo Mortensen's character and willingness to forsake eternal life. :)

I would compare him to Nicholson in the Shining in that I cannot see ANYONE else in that role.

If there is any flaw in the casting, it is that both of them are a little older than the roles in the books, but seriously, Rickman NAILED the role of Snape.

87. I disagree: It is the edge that Hoffman, good as he is, misses totally.
He just doesn't catch the nastiness that was finally what endeared Lester Bangs to those of us who may have chosen our heroes for the wrong reasons but at least liked them for what they really were.

I didn't write that. Lester Bangs wrote those sentences about Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Lenny Bruce. Nevertheless, I think they apply to Phillip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Lester Bangs. Funny how life works sometimes.

53. What's not to like?
I just realized that I have NEVER seen Uma in a role that I did not like her in. She is phenomenal, very underrated as an actress. If you absolutely want your heart broken every second of every scene she is in, see "Hysterical Blindness". That film was so painful... and such a stretch for a beauty like her to play a woman with no self-worth who thinks she is ugly. But Uma pulls it off beautifully.

And I am completely obsessed with her in pulp fiction. When it comes on TV I watch only the scenes with her in it. I am in love with her character in that, coke habit and all.

61. Richard Harris as Dumbledore. Bogart as Philip Marlowe
I miss Harris. It's almost as if the directors are afraid to use Gamboni, as little as he's done in the role. Richard Harris was just perfect.

Also, Gene Wilder in "The Little Prince,"

Joan Cusack in "Toys,"
absolutely everyone in "Lion in Winter,"
Lee Marvin in "Cat Ballou,"
Claude Rains in "Casablanca,"
absolutely everyone in "M*A*S*H,"
and absolutely everyone in "The Loved One."

More if I think of them...

Perfect portrayal, almost scary in its perfection. "Can you imagine what it's like to go blind and still be afraid of the dark?" Also Michelle Pfeiffer (sp?) as Titania, the Fairy Queen, in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." She's a seriously underrated actress, I think.

136. Shelly Winters was a pretty inspired choice for Mrs. Haze in that too
I'd also nominate James Mason for his role in NxNW. He's the perfect villain in that; his cold, debonair attitude makes a lot of otherwise far-fetched scenes seem real. (For instance, the crop-dusting scene; it seems perfectly natural that van Damm would have a pilot/crop-duster at his disposal as he's so meticulous and cunning. You never really think about it.)
