I grew up in Texas too and the fact that it is sooooo real is what makes it hilarious. This show is one of the best animated shows that I have ever seen and I watch it all the time and laugh everytime.
The show would not be the same without Dale. His character makes the show and it would not be as funny without him.

7. I think King of the Hill was more original and had better characters |
|
Family Guy is more about catch phrases, one-liners and bizarre non sequitur / obscure reference humor, which I feel already has been done better by the Simpsons and other shows. Both are great fun to watch though.

Although I do love Family Guy for being a funny simple cartoon, King of the Hill is like a sitcom via animation, and its hilarious. I think I like it because Hank reminds me so much of my dad with being so uptight about "modern" things.

If this was 1962, your poll would be: "Lenny Bruce or Vaughn Meader?"
And TIME has told that tale; just like it will tell this one.
40 years from now, classic comedy cartoon fans in AD 2046 will ask, "King of the What?", just like y'all are wondering "Vaughn WHO?".

Giggity giggity.
I guess being a native New Englander I appreciate FG's biting sarcasm. I don't think either the Simpsons or Beavis and Butthead ever push sensibilities as much as FG. KH is well done and the characters are interesting and 3 dimensional. I find Boomhower especially amusing. Still, that's not what I look for in comedic entertainment.

It's like they have 3 or 4 gimmicks and use them over and over.
I swear the next time one of them says, "Reminds me of the time" or "That's worst than when I.." I will just scream.
Oh and the talking about nothing at all in extraordinary situations shtick and the just reenacting a scene from a movie or TV show as if it is automatically funny just because they do it.
I once read an opinion that the main difference between Family Guy and Simpsons is that the Simpsons embacres humanity in spite of its flaws whereas Family Guy is pure grade-A nihilism. Hard to argue against that some times.
I think most of the shows on Adult Swim blow these two out of the water week in and week out. The Venture Brothers in particular has been very rewarding this season.

28. After season 2 it went down... after season 3, |
|
the intermixing of esoteric material became a bit too disjointed (or schizophrenic?) in its approach. Not funny.
South Park did one heck of a spoof on FG, that sums it up well (despite the spoof not being so gross, the esoteric cutaway was spot on...)

44. I think that those five minute segments are designed for limited audiences |
|
For example, in the Episode where Peter joins the New England Patriots, the two minute Shipoopi song is hillarious if you've been in or seen The Music Man but probably not funny at all if you haven't.

Admittedly, I used to find some of the Bill driven episodes a bit too depressing for a show that led into The Simpsons. That said, the show has always shown a great affection and warmth for all of the characters (even Khan and Cotton) and the storylines are more plot driven and better developed than a lot of the live-action 30 minute shows.

Mike Judge tries to be too realistic with that show. Seth McFarlane just jumps out of the realm of reality, and that's why Family Guy is a lot funnier.

The first series of Family Guy was good and the second was decent, but the third really lost me and that goes double for what I've seen of the fourth. Parker & Stone nailed it in the 'Cartoon Wars' South Park episode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLsdVSGwIro

I used to watch every episode of Family Guy, but IMHO, it's gone downhill to the point that almost the whole episode is a string of bizarre, mostly unfunny flashback jokes, with no plot.
As for King of the Hill, I've tried to watch it a few times, and have found it completely boring with no humor at all. Although I'm guessing a lot of the jokes are probably lost on non-Texans such as myself.

As much as I love the recycled pop culture references of "Family Guy" (I'm not being facetious - I really do love them), "King of the Hill" successfully portrays Texans in a way that is never mean-spirited or mocking. It's rare to find a show set on neither coast capture so well the experience of actually living in a small town. The characters are familiar to any Texan - who hasn't met a Hank or a Peggy or a Boomhauer or a Dale? It's light-hearted without being overly sentimental, and it's funny without being a rapid-fire 20-minute one-line-joke explosion. It's subtle, too, which is something sorely lacking in most TV shows.
That being said, there are certain episodes I won't watch. The "Ms. Wakefield" episode was just morbid and unfunny. And the Enrique-centric show was annoying and boring. But what show doesn't have misfires?
