1. Just go into the options menus
it's in there.

6. Seriously. All you have to do
is turn it off within the program. Trust me. I do it all the time.

2. go to START (Windows bottom left corner of task bar)
Programs and then Start Up, remove what you don't want there.

3. If all else fails...
Go to Start->Run and type in "msconfig" without quotes.

Then click on the Startup tab and uncheck the programs you don't want to run.

7. Seconded. There are 2 locations for regular appplications:
* Start menu->Startup folder
* A couple of keys in the Registry, and there's a lot in that key (don't touch unless you know what you're doing -- so I'm not going to tell you the references...)

msconfig brings up what's relevant. And safely. :D

A program can also be configured to run as a Service, but those are not so common for most users...

4. Install this ...

There are various ways to get rid of things that start automatically, but how you do it depends on how the thing imbeds itself in your system. Some things are in the Start Up. Others have a registry setting. Still others, particularly spyware and other forms of malware, have more intricate ways of self-executing.

Codestuff's Starter allows you to manipulate almost all of it. It also has an enhanced version of the task list that can allow you to shut down things more efficiently than you sometimes can with Windoze's built-in task list.

Everything set to start when your system boots will be listed via another menu, and you can "uncheck" anything you don't want to start. Sometimes this sort of thing is necessary before you can even remove the program, and doing it via Windoze's native functions can be a pain.

5. Assuming that you're on Windows XP

Select "run" on your start menu, and type in "msconfig." select the "startup" tab, and uncheck the boxes beside them.

Then, find the start menu folder for your username. Inside is a folder named "startup." Delete the MSN Messenger and AIM icons if they're there.

Note: MSN Messenger will put itself back on your startup list if you run it.
