Anyone else a fan of Eroica?
http://www.all-about-beethoven.com/symphony3.html

Beethoven's 3rd Symphony was good but it can't touch the power and wonder of his Ninth Symphony. It was around the 3rd Symphony when Beethoven started to go death

4. I believe the 3rd Symphony was composed in honor of Napolean...
And Beethoven later regretted that move...and tried to erase any evidence of that fact from his manuscripts!

It is a great symphony however!

7. Isn't that the reason it was changed to Eroica
To distance it from Napoleon?

5. I Love Eroica!
Then again, I love all of his music.

But the ninth is the best, no doubt about it. I have a recording of the ninth conducted by Bernstein at the Brandenburg Gate after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

does one have to wear black eyeliner? Sounds like fun but not if it involves makeup.

The Third is pretty good but the Ninth is the one that really gets to me......

11. The Third is wonderful...
...and there is nothing in any are medium that matches the 9th. After all, Beethoven was talking to God, even if there isn't one;) Since you're a Beethoven fan, my favorite live performance was the Emperor Concerto, Vienna Sympnhon Orchestra, Claudio Abado, Conductor; Mauritzio Polini at the key board. Heaven!!!

14. Beethoven himself
He was once asked by his friend Christian Kuffner (the poet who wrote the words of the Choral Fantasy) which of the symphonies was his own favourite.

"The Eroica."

"I would have guessed the C minor" the poet replied.

"No," said Beethoven, "the Eroica."

It is true that he originally dedicated the Third Symphony to Napoleon, whom he saw as a champion of the rights of man; but when he heard that N had crowned himself Emperor (in 1804) he shouted, "So he is only a man after all and will turn tyrant!", tore up the title page with its inscription 'Bonaparte', and wrote a new one inscribed: Sinfonia Eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand'uomo -- Heroic symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man.

The tale is told that when Beethoven was given the news of Napoleon's death he remarked, "Did I not foresee this when I wrote the funeral march in the Eroica?"

16. The start of the Romantic period in music.
I haven't heard it in awhile and will listen again soon. I remember liking Klemper with the Philharmonia, Bernstein with the NY Phils, Walter with the Columbia Symph, Szell with the Cleveland and Zinman with the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich. Great stuff.

17. The other Eroica
Hi LynneSin,

You've got to check this one out, too. Eroica Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the best wines we've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I'm not a big fan of Riesling, but this one's exceptional.

http://www.ste-michelle.com/Eroica_Riesling.cfm

The wine was named for Beethoven's composition, and is produced in collaboration between a German winemaker, Dr. Loosen, and Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville, WA.

We have one bottle of the '02 right now. I'm saving it for a special occasion.

Julie

But we all seemed to gang up on her for an innocent typo.
Great fun for us, not so much for her... but she has a good sense of humour. Still, should be said that it was meant in fun....

24. There is an excellent red rose called 'Eroica'
It's a Hybrid Tea raised in Germany in 1968. Its raiser originally named it 'Erotika' -- the red rose is after all the flower of love and passion -- but the prudes of the Registration Committee of the American Rose Society (the international authority in these matters) refused to register the name and so it was changed to 'Eroica'.

28. It's the Beethoven symphony I've listened to the most.
Forced myself to like it in my first attempt at classical music appreciation long ago.

It's the only symphony that resides on my 2mb SD card, and it'll probably stay there.
