Movie recommendations?
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 08:55 PM by chaska
Seen any good movies lately?

I saw 'Who Killed The Electric Car?' today. Excellent.
As was Al Gore's movie.
The best movie I've seen in a long time is 'Thank You For Smoking'. Whether you smoke or not (I don't) you'll find this absolutely hilarious. Best cast EVER. Even Katie Holmes is okay.

4. Here's some I've rated highly in the past few weeks
Oasis
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320193/

American Splendor - biopic of Harvey Pekar who I didn't know, but now I've started reading his comic books
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305206/

Hidden (Caché) - if you can, see it with somebody else because you'll definately want to talk about it afterwards

Lollilove - hilarious low-budget comedy by Jenna Fischer with her husband James Gunn
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316187/

Manderlay - Lars von Trier's last film; possibly best to watch Dogville first, but not essential. This is one of the most incendiary films of recent years and well worth the effort. It's out on DVD in the US at the start of August.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342735/

Hustle & Flow - of 'It's Hard Out There For A Pimp' song fame.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410097/

Suicide Club - Japanese horror/thriller that's a lot more intelligent than I was expecting
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/

-------------

I want to see all three you mention. Gore's doesn't open theatrically here until September, although as will the other two I'll probably wait for DVD.

5. No, I hardly ever go see movies in theaters anymore.
Unless they're kids movies. Cars was surprisingly good, actually.

As far as recommendations for movies that aren't in the theaters, I recommend Avalon. And Harold and Maude.

6. We finally saw "40-year-old Virgin"
We LOVED it. Both shockingly crude and incredibly sweet (without being saccharine) if you can put those two together.

The only downside is that S.O. has been singing the theme from "The Greatest American Hero" around the house ever since.

8. Well...if you want to be shocked to shit
"The Devils Rejects"

However - this flick aint for everyone.

IT's violent, gory, nihilist and grim. But at the same time, it gets you thinking.

10. If you're renting movies, you have to see "Everything Is Illuminated."
This is the best movie that I've seen for a very long time. It's touching and funny and I just loved it, especially the dog, Sammy Davis Junior Junior, the officious seeing-eye bitch, LOL! About a month ago someone else asked for movie recommendations here and several of us hijacked that thread, talking about how much we liked this movie. It's a serious film, and has subtitles, about a young Jewish man's search for the woman who saved his grandfather's life in the Ukraine during WWII, but has some very funny parts. I really enjoyed it, and I can't get the final song, that ran with the credits, out of my head. I'm wearing purple a lot, these days... If you see it, you'll know what I mean.:D
