Why Can't The World Cup Be Every Year?
I understand that the Olympics are every four years because the of the many events. At least they should be every two years.

1. I think it would lose its "special-ness" if it were more often.
The rarity is part of the beauty.

5. Absolutely!

What GOPisEvil said.

I wish it was more often but it would change the
whole feeling of the event.

12. And it's a grind already
Every other year already is a world cup or European championship year. All the other confederations, except for our little shitty Concacaf, also have tournaments that are very big deals to them. The world cup is magical because it's brings players in their prime under the world spotlight. Players already have short shelf lives. Any more spotlight and the injuries start mounting and the product becomes bad (well worse than it is given the # of slots given for mediocre teams).

4. Oh Hell!
Here we go again.

( Insert continuous circler argument pro-soccer vs. soccer sucks)

I'm so f**king sick of defending soccer. It needs no more defending.
The world knows this and most of us know this.

ENOUGH!

7. Ain't it FUN (every FOUR years)? I don't watch FUTbol otherwise
The intensity is the COUNTRIES and the 3 games every day. It loses its punch at the end when they take a day or two off.

Edited on Tue Jul-11-06 01:13 AM by k_jerome

11. soccer players need four years
to build up their "magicial healing powers" that allow them to continue playing when, 30 seconds earlier, they were writhing on the ground as if they'd been shot.

Edited on Tue Jul-11-06 06:47 AM by Bassic
Is apparently quite effective. It also hurts like hell the next day apparently, but that is to be expected.

14. Because of continental cups
There is the Euro Championship, then there is Copa Libertadores, then there is Africa Nations Cup - all in different years. There might be some Asian Cup but I never heard of it...

Another reason is these players need some rest. Most of them (at least the one playing in Europe) have 70-80 games a season with their clubs. Add to that number 10-12 games with their national teams and you get close to 90 games a season.

The big leagues in Europe finished 3 weeks prior to the World Cup and now the players will have 2 weeks of rest if they are lucky and everything starts over again.

16. The European season has already started
The first round of the Intertoto Cup (minor qualifying competition for the bigger UEFA cup) has already been played with the next round of games starting this weekend.

There's even a chance that some players who took part in the World Cup will play a part (Craig Moore, Australia & Newcastle United)

15. Money!
the various high level club teams in Italy, Germany, the UK, etc make way too much money for too many people to have players taking extended time off every year to play for their national teams.

And, the logistics involved in planning & setting up a World Cup take years.

17. It wouldn't be as special if it was every year
And it's a huge disruption: there are many other competitions that the players are needed for by their clubs.
