I was in my mid-twenties when it first aired.
Does anyone know what kids thought of this show when it was on? If you were a kid when it was on, what did you think of it?
For me, it was Post-Modernism Invades Mainstream Children's Programming, but I was in graduate school. (I made a Terry Dactly costume for a costume party once.)

Yup, 9am was a little early to get up but we always managed to start most Saturdays with PeeWee and a jay or two.

2. I was around 7 when I used to watch it. |
|
I thought it was cool. I watched it every Saturday morning.I loved the Genie " Lecka lecka hi lecka hiney hiney ho". I can't believe that I still remember that. I liked it because it was very hyperactive. But now when I watch it I would probably have one of my anxiety attacks. The coolest thing about it : Laurence Fishburn as the Jheri Curl wearing cowboy. Ohmygoodness ! We all have to start somewhere. I liked the Pee Wee movies too. Don't forget the Pee Wee dance, his bike and the red shoes.

4. All of that was on the episode tonight. |
|
I loved the Christmas episode. I believe it is finally on DVD.
The hyperactive element. Shows like Josie and the Pussycats and Scooby Doo that I watched when I was a kid were very hyperactie and loud and I can hardly stand to watch them now as an adult.

12. Benicio Del Toro also was involved in Pee Wee world |
|
He played the dog-faced boy I think in Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

His look was based on a photograph of a black cowboy in a series of TIME LIFE books on the Old West. I think it may also have been used in a series of books about African-American history.

9. I didn't like the second "King of Cartoons". The 1st one seemed drunk |
|
And I found that quite refreshing to watch a drunkard showing vintage toons on a reel to reel to kiddies nationwide. The second king had a remote control for showing VCR tapes of frankly less freaky cartoons. Sell outs.

11. the King Of Cartoons was William Marshall |

Edited on Tue Jul-11-06 04:17 AM by Syrinx
He was very well known from the "blaxpoitation" movies of the early seventies.
S. Epatha Merkerson was also a cast member. She was on Law & Order later. I'm not sure if she's still on it, haven't watched in a while.
And don't forget the unforgettable Phil Hartman. He was on the show too.
EDIT: Striked out the word "very."

18. Agree. Do NOT rent "Big Top Pee Wee" |
|
The followup to "Pee Wee's Big Adventure". Horribly unfunny.

13. Remember the Pee Wee HBO specials? |
|
They pre-dated the CBS series and were really geared toward adults.

15. I was at university at the time. |
|
My mom, dad, and younger brother and sister all watched it most Saturdays. (No preteens in the bunch.)
More trivia: Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo) composed the incidental music for the show.
