Pink Floyd's Barrett dies aged 60
Syd Barrett, one of the original members of legendary rock group Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60, the band's spokesman has confirmed.

He was born Roger Keith Barrett in Cambridge in 1946 and met future bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour at school there.

The guitarist was invited to join Pink Floyd by Waters in 1965 and the group went on to sell millions of albums.

He suffered from diabetes and had not been recording music in recent years

1. Poor guy. So much talent, so f*cked up....
....I hope to hell that in the last 20 years or so some of the advances in treatment for severe mental illness were able to help Syd.

Some of the saddest music I know of is the Pink Floyd songs that touch on Syd's illness.

Vale, Syd. Requiescat in pace.

sadly,
Bright

5. What could have been...
It seems like there are a lot of brilliant Brit musicians who just totally go off the deep end. The guy from Fleetwood Mac (Jeremy Spencer, I think) who just disappeared into a cult one day, Peter Green, another Fleetwood Mac guy who fortunately has returned, Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine, the guy from The La's...there are literally dozens who just went off into the ozone, generally helped along by drugs.

Not that American musicians are all that much better, but ours seem to DIE, not just disappear.

10. I thought
Kevin Shields was just playing guitar in Primal Scream these days. He seems like a pretty normal guy, really. I think all those stories of how freaky he is are just exaggerations.

Yeah, it was a disappointment that we never had anything to follow up Loveless...but on the other hand, probably not as much of a disappointment as it would have been if he'd just put out some sub-par album just to put out an album. How in the hell could you follow up Loveless, anyway?

Oh well. RIP, Syd.

Pity that MBV never followed up with anything after that.

12. A little bit of Syd to remember him by
Bike

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I've got a cloak it's a bit of a joke.
There's a tear up the front. It's red and black.
I've had it for months.
If you think it could look good, then I guess it should.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house.
I don't know why I call him Gerald.
He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I've got a clan of gingerbread men.
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men.
Take a couple if you wish. They're on the dish.

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things.

I know a room full of musical tunes.
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork.
Let's go into the other room and make them work.

Rest in Peace Brother

13. and Roger Waters wept
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
year after year,
running over the same old ground. What have we found?
The same old fears,
wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here - 1975

And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

Do you have a habit of jumping to conclusions based on small understanding of the issue? I just came from the thread where you tried to argue that FIFA's racism directive applied mostly or even only to the actions of fans.

30. Hogwash
Number one, he took way more than one or two trips. For example, it's known that he had "friends" who used to dose him constantly, and then lock him up in a closet when he freaked out. That can't be good for your state of mind.

Number two, people who were close to him think he was probably already a little squirrelly regarding his domineering mother, a subject explored in some depth in The Wall. (Yeah, I know there's also a bit of Waters in the Pink character, but read a real history, it's all there.)

I'm reminded of a statement attributed to Timothy Leary, to the effect that "LSD is such a powerful drug, it induces delusions even in people that haven't taken it!"

45. 'Tis a sad day, eh mate?
I will remember him by these words:

A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return.
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset.

The time is with the month of winter solstice
When the change is due to come.
Thunder in the other course of heaven.
Things cannot be destroyed once and for all.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset, sunrise.

A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return.
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset, sunrise.

I'm happy to see Syd given the tribute and respect he deserves. Considering how much bandwidth that has been utterly wasted in the Lounge by the musically retarded praising those worthless American Idol hacks, this is a much welcome change. So long Syd. I hope you finally find the peace you've longed for in your quiet isolation. May flying pigs take you to that great gig in the sky.
