Okay, fess up. Who here puts cheddar on their spaghetti?
My wife and I are debating the origin of this bastardization of spaghetti. I say it's a Northeasterner/Yankee thing, and she says people do it everywhere. She's from New Mexico, and her mother (also from NM) taught her to do it. To me it's akin to that horrid habit of putting a slice of cheddar on apple pie. Damn heathens!

So, do you pratice this form of food destruction? If so, where are you from and who taught you to ruin your food so horribly?

My wife and I eagerly await your response. Thank you for your consideration.

We'd have clean renewable power just by harnessing the energy of Italian Grandmothers spinning in thier graves. :scared:

3. Only when I make spaghetti pizza!

geez...my son used to complain during our lean years when I would make pizza out of just about any leftover...and who'da thunk that BBQ chicken pizza with mushrooms and broccoli would become such a mainstay of the American deit

To this day, he won't eat beef stew...would make enough to last us a 5 days in a variety of ways...

They even sell it in a can in all of the grocery stores.

6. My ex does
I use goat mozza on mine - cuts the acidity of the tomato sauce, and adds even more flavour.

I'm not Italian, neither was he... :D

11. I THOUGHT LOUNGERS WERE BETTER THAN THIS.
I thought everyone here was into the American community of cheese. But now I see that I was mistaken. Never mind the great state of Wisconsin! We put cheddar on hamburgers. It is very rare that restaurants serve cheeseburgers with swiss, mozzarella, fromunda, Munster, Brie or some other stuff. Okay, maybe Jack but what about AMERICAN cheese on spaghetti?

Why do these people hate GOD?

13. I had a bacon cheeseburger the other day...
with Swiss cheese.

It was tasty.

As for God, all I have to say is, if he is made of cheese, and I mean, I think we can all agree that he definitely is, I hope he has the good manners not to be all or part Brie. That'd be just a bit too 'French' (and 'French' I mean 'Faggy' (and by 'Faggy' I mean 'Like John Kerry')) if you get what I'm saying.

12. yes and here is the origin of it
i bet you are a younger model, in older times grocery stores only carried nasty powdered parmesan cheese in a green can instead of real parmesan or romano

therefore my mom would use a nice sharp cheddar instead, since it was the only "real" cheese to be had

and it was good

21. My wife agrees with you....
Her mom rightly detested Kraft canned parmesans. I mean, it does smell just like barf.

I'm not saying that it doesn't taste good, but my wife is a total food purist, and somehow she's okay with this. Normally she'd be the one with a torch and pitchfork at the sight of such blasphemy.

Thanks for the explanation. I think it's a frontier thing.

14. Cincinnati 5-Way Chili
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 12:31 AM by Hissyspit
has spaghetti, but not spaghetti sauce. It REQUIRES cheddar cheese, but I love it. Chopped onions and beans with Cincinnati meat chili. YUM.

16. Can you explain to me the many ways of chili in Cinci?
I've always wondered how many ways there are, what are the various ingredients that can be added, etc.

I gather the five ways are the five ingredients?

24. Yes, the five way are the five ingredients.
If you leave the beans off, it's 4-Way. If you leave the onions off, it's 5-Way, etc. I think I have that right.

The chili is not like Texas chili in that it has cocoa and nutmeg and other spices in it.

25. Thank you Hissyspit...
I've always wondered about it, but have never been to that part of Ohio. I've spent time in Cleveland, Akron, Hudson, Shaker Heights, etc, but never Cincinatti.

So, is it sweet rather than spicy?

27. It tastes like meat chili, so it can be hot if you add more red pepper,
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 01:18 AM by Hissyspit
generally it is spicy, but not all together hot. Not particularly sweet. It's a Greek tradition. There are lots of different recipes. If you find Skyline prepackaged in your supermarket: http://www.skylinechili.com/
you can make your own at home. OR...

"Order Skyline Chili Online

Go to the online ordering page at Cincinnati Favorites »"

"Want to assemble great tasting combinations at home? Order everything you need online"

Oh, I forgot oyster crackers. Maybe that is No. 5 and not the beans.

http://www.stefoodie.net/archives/on_the_road/

"Skyline Chili, served 5-way style:

with 1) spaghetti, topped with 2) onions, 3) beans, 4) cheese, and 5) oyster crackers."

"Skyline is an institution in Cincinnati (it first opened in 1949), only rivaled by Gold Star (born in 1965). (There are other mom-and-pop places too, all claiming theirs is better/best.) Neither are that impressive, but if you're ever in this Midwestern city, you *need* to have some! Afterwards, make the trek to Graeter's ice cream, where they still make ice cream using the French pot process -- just 2 gallons at a time. We forgot to bring the camera with us when we were there, but oooh... the summer flavors!)"

There's the cheddar cheese!

28. It's just so messed up that I think I'd love it....
It's kind of like a Frito Pie, only midwestern.

The traditional way to serve a Frito Pie in the Southwest is to split a bag of Fritos on the side, put it into a little paper bow, pour in chili and top with cheese and onions. :9

Here's a highbrow version in an actual bowl.
