3. absolutely! the other Darceys are so stiff.
I did like Bride & Prejudice, too.

But the BBC version is the best - although some of the casting is iffy (Wickham is not handsome; Charlotte is not old or plain).

4. he has that smoldering sex appeal....
the scene when he first asks Elizabeth for her hand in marriage is just the best...I have to rank it among the most offensive marriage proposals of all time...and her response is perfect.

5. WOOF!
Thanks for the pics! Absolutely perfect as Darcy.

And what a bit of reality turning in on itself in Bridget Jones, that Helen Fielding included the U.K.'s P&P miniseries obsession in the novel and said that she fashioned Mark Darcy with Colin Firth in mind, then Colin Firth played Mark Darcy in the movie...ow. Now my brain hurts.

13. "...And your family are well?..."

"Yes, quite well, thank you."

"And where are you staying?"

"At the Inn." (I forget the name of the place she mentions.)

"Ohyesofcourse!...and your family are well?"

"Yes, they are all very well, I assure you."

My wife and my stepdaughters LOVE that scene, and can quote it word for word.

Truly inspired filmmaking! Soft porn for the Masterpiece Theatre set--whoever was divinely inspired to stage it that way--"Em...Colin...now at this point you're going to jump in the lake and do the next scene dripping wet..."

SIGH!!

On edit--That pic's got me so flustered I can't type!

6. I just finished reading...
Darcy's Story, a novel that my mom bought at Jane Austen's house. I wouldn't recommend it that highly though, The author liberally used huge chunks of direct quotes from Jane Austen's book. She did have an interesting take of retelling the story from Darcy's point of view, whereas P&P is from Elizabeth's. She writes out the scenes we know only from Eliza's description, such as Georgiana's thwarted elopement with Wickham, and Lady Catherine's conversation with Dacry about the rumor that he will marry Eliza.

Unfortunately the author is not terribly imaginaitve and really does not elaborate much on what we know happened form Eliza's descriptions. Not does she flesh out Darcy's transformation from arrogant and proud to considerate as fully as I would have liked.

But it was a fun quick read, and might be worthwhile for big P&P fans.

10. By a landslide, apparently!
I thought the vote might be tipped toward the miniseries, but I didn't expect it to be that Firth/Ehle heavy.

Lounge members sure have good taste!

12. The Knightley version -- and I NEVER thought I'd say that -- ever!!!
I worship Austen, and have worshiped the Firth version ever since I first saw it. I refused to see the latest version at the theater. I was FORCED to watch it three weeks ago... and, gang? IT'S THE BEST EVER. She's by far the best Elizabeth, and.... although the wonderful Mr. Firth is wonderful, he was upstaged as Mr. Darcy.

Other things, too, but I'll leave it at that. Although, Saffy was a better Lydia, imo.

I am still in shock I feel this way....

14. I was also surprised by how much I liked this newest version
I still like the A&E version best because of the detail - the movie version had to leave so much out, and because of Colin Firth. But I thought the Knightly P&P was somehow much more intensely romantic - not in a bodice-ripper way, but in an emotional, chaotic way.

30. I agree with what you said
The movie wasn't as detailed, and much of the "soldier arc" was left out, but that was from time necessity. And, both my SO and I agree that it WAS more romantic... and she loves the Firth version more than I do...

I also liked Brenda Blethyn's portrayal of Mrs. Bennett very, very much.

I still won't watch the new version cause I like the BBC version so much. But maybe I'll have to give it a chance.

17. You should. Not to replace A&E's version, but as an
alternative telling. ;-)

I have the A&E boxed set, my sisters and mother and I all adore that version, but I really, truly liked the Knightley version. I considered myself a Colin Firth purist, too. Do check out the movie.

I refused to see it, but I was forced to a few weeks ago... bribed, actually. Halfway through, I was like,"This isn't toooo bad." That's when my friend knew I really liked it.

19. [Insert Elaine Benes here] Get OUT!!! [add shove]
My goodness I find it hard to think that anyone could even challenge The Firth (and The Ehle), but I must admit I'm curious. I haven't seen it myself, yet (with a toddler who goes to movies these days?) but I do want to.

And of COURSE nobody could improve on Saffy's Lydia! "Denny, go get me a glass of wine--I can scarce draw breath, I'm so FAT." She's the best!

But, it is good.... every time I say that, I think a thunderbolt is going to strike me!

24. I'll stick with Garson-Oliver, thank you
because it also contained the equally irresistible Mary Boland (Mrs. Bennet) and Edna May Oliver (Lady Katherine). If the BBC version was the one they showed on A&E, it put me to sleep. And I'd say that if I wasn't one five daughters who was born to working poor parents parents myself!

What? You want I should post pictures of Keira Knightley in her knickers, or Colin Firth in his?

Oh, somebody start fanning the people on this thread, or maybe administering cold showers.
