When it rains, it pours.

I went home to see him last month and he looked poorly, but he was admitted to the hospital yesterday and apparently he has cancer and the prognosis is terminal. I kinda knew that it would likely be the last time we saw each other, but damn it, I....I guess I really do not know how to put into words how depressing it is.

Shit.

4. I'm so sorry...
I lost my father in 1991 and still miss him terribly. Let him know now how much you love him and how important he is to you. My father died suddenly with no time for "good-byes" or final "I love you"----I always wonder if he knew how much I admired and loved him.

5. dude -- i'm so sorry.
my dad is on his way out and i'm his caretaker. -- he is not going easy.

my wish -- hope -- prayer for you and your father -- is that your dad's mortal coil loosens as gracefully and painlessly as it can.

i don't know -- i find it hard on sons to lose their dads -- so i hope you are ok.

8. I hope that for him. I love him even though we aren't very close.
He is a good person, but not a very responsible one. His life has been a downward spiral for most of my life since my mother divorced him. Drinking, a second marriage to someone far too young for him. I always hoped he'd live his life out in peace and go quietly. Regardless of his faults, he did love me and my brothers (and I gained more siblings from his second marriage which also failed).

I feel badly I live 2000 miles away and cannot do more until I know more. I want to be there with him. I owe him that much at least.

12. I'm sorry.
I'm not sure there is anything I could tell you that would be comforting as I have not yet lost any parents. But feel free to ask the Lounge for support. We're here for you.

Dear Liberal Veteran...this is so hard...
I have been down that road, and was lucky enough to have 8 amazing days with Daddy at home (with the help of hospice care) as he died of cancer. It was SO hard, but such a profound experience at the same time.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and with everyone who knows and cares about you and your dad.
May you find the strength to get through this -
We will be here for you, for whatever it's worth.

Sometimes it is a blessing to know the end is near, it puts things in perspective and allows time to make any amends. Best wishes for peace, strength, courage and wisdom to you at this difficult time.
