World War III may be starting...What are you doing?
Tell me, what's going thru your mind, what action are you taking, what is your gut telling you? I'm curious what's going on in your heads as we sit in the Lounge trying to numb ourselves and think positive. Not to be a downer, but I'm a little scared. I have been for a while, but now it's getting worse. Please share your thoughts.

12. I am scared and sad
I don't know if this will be WWIII, but I have a friend whose parents are in Beirut, and another friend whose boyfriend is in Israel. And the rabbinic intern at my synagogue has people in Israel. So I am worried about people on both sides of this. And sad.

But that area has been war torn for centuries. We, in all our arrogance, are not going to be able to stop it. And with today's technology, we're all screwed.

No telling where that young woman might be (slap meself for almost typing girl, since she is almost 27).

But she wants to be the next Madeleine Albright and the one who brings peace to the Middle East.

On edit: Not that Madeleine Albright brought peace to the Middle East.

And it just occurred to me now. I was in Morocco years and years ago when the Camp David accord was agreed on. What a happy day!

Oh yeah! Mad Max, the Road Warrior, the computer game Wasteland!

I thought nuclear holocaust would be the greatest thing ever. Plus...no school!!

Of course, now that I have children of my own...yeah, it's all pretty fucked up.

21. I'm going about my daily routine
Basically, there's nothing I can do about it and I've lived with this most of my life.

One of my earliest memories are the movie news clips of nuke testing in AZ, NV and the Pacific. Went through the joke of air raid drills in grade school. I was stationed at a prime target base during the Cuban Missile Crisis. To quote the First Shirt, "The base won't be evac'ed, so if this goes ugly and you live through it, remember you're still members of the US Air Force." Then went on to be stationed at two SAC bases, always primary targets. In Europe the Soviet forces were about fifty miles away and they would have rolled us like a cheap rug and we would have had to go to nukes. Then during the eighties there was Raygun playing chicken with the Evil Empire.

So I've been scared for fifty plus years. Can't wet the water any more.

24. I just took a nice, long evening swim in the pool.
It's a hot, clear evening, and the water is as warm as bath water. I floated around in a zen haze for well over an hour. Now I'm getting ready to dig into a pint of Cherry Garcia.

As for the other side of the world, que serra, serra.

25. Watching as everything continues as it always does
and nothing seems any different. Waiting for the winds of change but keeping the kite on the shelf because I don't want to look back years from now and think of how stupid I looked, holding the thought that something different than always might happen, that some part of our hubris blinded society might shift in unsettlement. And listening to "bad day" by REM way too many times. I sigh, not one more...

And then, what the hell, have a Quarter-Pounder with Cheese, since I haven't eaten beef in over 15 years.

Laid first, though.

31. Getting ready to enlist
Thinking about how I will spit up my enlistment bonus, deciding how I want my insurance to pay out if I die.

I'm not suicidal mind you. I have longed for military service for many years. It just happens to be for WWIII.

Plus, at least if I go I know that I will be able to have a voice against or at least bear witness to war crimes. Also if I go and die, I have saved at least one other persons life who would have died in my place. Lastly if it is my time to die, I will die, regardless of whether I am safely tucked away here in Seattle or on the front lines. For all I know if I don't go a satellite will fall on my head.

I am also thinking about AlienGirl and how much I love her. :loveya: And how I am going to marry her soon. :loveya:

It is not WW3.

They've killed each other before and will continue to do so.

What will get them to stop? Money? If so, let's give them Warren Buffet's telephone number.

Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 11:17 PM by Oeditpus Rex
It's 2-2 in the 12th. :woohoo:

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.

—James Earl Jones, "Field of Dreams"

Baseball will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us.

—Walt Whitman

Edit: They're going into the 14th now. Still 2-2. :woohoo:

37. Well, I'm not terribly worried...
maybe I haven't been spending enough time in GD.

However, if I were convinced that it was the start of WWIII, I would be scrambling to stockpile insulin and other diabetes care supplies for my daughter. And gather non-perishable food and water.

If I didn't have a family, I would head for ground zero, wherever I thought that might be. Being a WWWIII survivor wouldn't be a picnic.
