I think that maybe 50 watts worth of panel is about 3' X 3' and costs a couple of hundred dollars. The problem is, and correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will), is that the power generated is DC, and would need to be converted to AC to power things like fans and lights in the house.
There are a lot of uses like battery charging and DC lighting. Stuff like that.

It was idle curiosity.
A former neighbor called and said the people who bought my house had some in the yard for installation and I wondered what it was setting them back. Funny that they are installing these before replacing the roof. Oh well.....
