what songs do you hear in your head when you're sad?
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 05:32 PM by idgiehkt
I've been really sad for the past couple of days and I've been hearing "Lightning Crashes" by Live playing in my head non-stop, which just makes it worse because that song is so macabre they could use it to sell anti-depressants. Another one that plays in my head against my will is "The Mountains Win Again" by Blues Traveler. It's like a constant soundtrack; I forget about it and then I'll realize, 'that damn song is playing again'. It's kind of driving me nuts.

Someone once suggested playing Sousa marches at full volume and marching around the living room to them to help depression; I've not tried that yet.

2. Well, it depends on just what the cause of my sadness is.....
I am a little melancholy today.....

And the song in my head is "Lullabye, or Goodnight my Angel" by Billy Joel.....

It makes me cry......

Tommorrow Wendy
I like the Concrete Blonde version, this is different but
has Johnette in it though:

some of the best lyrics ever are in this song:
"I told the priest, don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming."

5. Lately, this one:
Mad Season "Long Gone Day"

So much blood I'm starting to drown
Runs from cold to colder
Time to time the sky's come down
To help me lose my way
Tears and lies for answers
You and open veins, God knows I'm gone
Girl I just want you to
Come on down
Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall
These sins are mine and I've done wrong, oh babe
Come on down

Long Gone Day
Mmmm, who ever said
We wash away with the rain

See you all from time to time
Isn't it so strange
How far away we all are now
Am I the only one who remembers that summer
Oh, I remember
Everyday each time the place was saved
The music that we made
The wind has carried all of that away

Long gone day
Mmmm, who ever said
We wash away with the rain

So many tears I'm starting to drown
The rain in heaven's all come down
Silver spoons affix the crown
The luckless ones are broken
Fears and lies for answers
You and open flames
God knows I'm gone
And I just want you to
Come on down, hmmm

Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall
These sins are mine and I've done wrong
I want you to, oh, I just want you to
Come on down

I fear again, like then, I've lost my way
And shout to God to bring my sunny day

I sing it to myself a lot as I'm working and trying to get my mind off of shit.

31. Hey, if you like that- check this one out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBACTCS4SmI

Mad Season- River of Deceit

My pain is self-chosen
At least, so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride, and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight, tied to my waist
The River of Deceit pulls down, ohh
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down (4 times)
My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see
The River of Deceit pulls down, yeah
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down (4 times)
The pain is self-chosen, yeah
Our pain is self-chosen
Down, oh down (4 times)

6. "Rehearsals for Retirement" by Phil Ochs
The days grow longer for smaller prizes
I feel a stranger to all surprises
You can have them I don't want them
I wear a different kind of garment
In my rehearsals for retirement

The lights are cold again they dance below me
I turn to old friends they do not know me
All but the beggar he remembers
I put a penny down for payment
In my rehearsals for retirement

Had I known the end would end in laughter
I tell my daughter it doesn't matter

The stage is tainted with empty voices
The ladies painted they have no choices
I take my colors from the stable
They lie in tatters by the tournament
In my rehearsals for retirement

Where are the armies who killed a country
And turned a strong man into a baby
No comes the rabble they are welcome
I wait in anger and amusement
In my rehearsals for retirement

Had I known the end would end in laughter
Still I tell my daughter that it doesn't matter

Farewell my own true love, farewell my fancy
Are you still owin' me love, though you failed me
But one last gesture for her pleasure
I'll paint your memory on the monument
In my rehearsals for retirement

7. For me it's usually "And She Goes On" by Crowded House
Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden, singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountains ring
To the sound of her laughter,
And she goes on, and on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Til we see her once again
In a world without end

Owe it all to Frank Sinatra
His song was playing when she walked into the room
After the long weekend,
They were a lifetime together

Hear it in the eyes of children
And in the clear blue mountain view
We're coloring in the sky
And painting ladders to heaven,
And she goes on, and on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Til we see her once again
In a world without end

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
And I always will remember
In a world without end

In memory of my beautiful daughter, gone 8 years, 6 months, 10 days...
I love you Baby

Better Be Home Soon (Neil Finn)
LYRICS

somewhere deep inside
something's got a hold on you
and it's pushing me aside
see it stretch on forever
I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon

stripping back the coats
of lies and deceiption
back to nothingness
like a week in the desert

I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon

so don't say no, don't say nothing's wrong
cos when you get back home maybe I'll be gone

when the nights go down
when you've had your fill
when there's nothing left

it would cause me pain
if we were to end it
but I could start again
you can depend on it

I know I'm right
for the first time in my life
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon
that's why I tell you
you'd better be home soon

32. That's one of my all-time favorites...Neil Finn is an amazing songwriter
Have you listened to any of his solo stuff? I LOVE his "Try Whistling This" album...
I was a huge Split Enz fan from the get-go, and was SO bummed when Crowded House disbanded...
But Neil is still going strong!

"All by Myself" by Eric Carmen. Even if what I'm sad about has nothing to do with a relationship. It's such a movie cliche.

11. "Outlaw" by Joan Jett
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 09:14 PM by Jamastiene
Also, "Good Music", "Contact", and plenty of other songs by Joan Jett about feeling down or rejected. She's a master at giving that feeling of comraderie to the lonely.

Here are the lyrics to Outlaw:

Outlaw

(Joan Jett/Kenny Laguna/Bob Halligan/Ricky Byrd)

Black streak on the boulevard
Another place they don't let you stay
White rain fallin' cold-n-hard
Gotta get thru it anyway

Try to be what ya wanna be
Who's to say you ain't got the right
In a world where you never sleep
Every day is another fight
You can't live with the old rules
And I can understand
So you run to stay sane

When you're an outlaw everyone knows your name
When you're an outlaw everyone thinks you're strange

Try to be what you're born to be
Don't you dare you ain't got the might
When they go and get ya angry
You'll be there to stand and fight
You ain't lookin' for trouble hey, I can understand you but it's here anyway

When you're an outlaw everyone knows your name
When you're an outlaw nobody feels your pain

There goes the renegade you're the one they love to hate
But I don't look at you that way
You can live by your own rules if that's the way you planned
But there's no where to go

When you're an outlaw you run like an outlaw
You live like an outlaw alone like an outlaw
I know you're an outlaw I'm not your enemy
'Cuz you're not an outlaw when you're alone with me
So c'mon outlaw, outlaw

13. Tears For Fears, "Mad World"
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tommorow, no tommorow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which Im dying
Are the best Ive ever had
I find it hard to tell you
cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
Its a very, very
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me whats my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

14. She said hey this music really gets on my nerves. I said what music?
She said the music in my head.
Sometimes it makes me wish I was dead.
It's like a record, it's like a rodeo.
Can you hear it?

I said NO.

She's sad, she said she's sad.

when I am sad...(this goes ALL the way back to when I was a little girl)
I try to make myself feel better. I would (and still do) sing to myself.
I have sang this paticular song to myself as far back as I can remember
and, for some reason it helps me to feel better (I can NOT believe I am telling you guys this)

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.

One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.

One to mend the jerseys
one to mend the socks
and one to mend the holes in
the little girls' frocks.

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full.

Now that I am older I will also sing:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

For me it'd be "Midori to Kaze to" ("With the Greenery and the Wind"), as played by the Japanese voice actress/performer Kawasumi Ayako. Slow, wistful piano piece.

Although usually I don't hear anything...I'm too focused on being sad.

28. Now they make new movies in old black and white...
Now they make new movies in old black and white
With happy endings, where nobody fights
So if you find yourself in that nostalgic rage
Honey, jump right up and show your age

Chorus:
I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

I remember bein' buck-toothed and skinny
Writin' fan letters to Sky King and Penny
Oh I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's Bandstand, Disneyland, growin' up fast
Drinkin' on a fake I.D.
Yeah, and Rama of the jungle was everyone's Bawana
But only jazz musicians were smokin' marijuana
Yeah, I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could solve some mysteries too

Then it's flat top, dirty bob, coppin' a feel
Grubbin' on the livin' room floor (so sore)
Yeah, they send you off to college, try to gain a little knowledge,
But all you want to do is learn how to score

Yeah, but now I'm gettin' old, don't wear underwear
I don't go to church and I don't cut my hair
But I can go to movies and see it all there
Just the way that it used to be

Chorus:
That's why I wish I had a pencil thin mustache
The "Boston Blackie" kind
A two-toned Ricky Ricardo jacket
And an autographed picture of Andy Devine

Oh, I could be anyone I wanted to be
Maybe suave Errol Flynn or the Sheik of Araby
If I only had a pencil thin mustache
Then I could do some cruisin' too

Coda:
Yeah, Bryl-cream, a little dab'll do yah
Oh, I could do some cruisin' too

I couldn't stay sad for long listening to that one, it's up-tempo. Thanks

another...shoot I can't remember which one it is, that is pensive

they lyrics are: (Just gonna post 'em all...so pretty)

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call,
Wanted to sail upon your waters
since I was three feet tall.
You've seen it all, you've seen it all.

Watch the men who rode you,
Switch from sails to steam.
And in your belly you hold the treasure
that few have ever seen, most of them dreams,
Most of them dreams.

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late.
The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late.

I've done a bit of smugglin'
I've run my share of grass.
I made enough money to buy Miami,
But I pissed it away so fast,
Never meant to last, never meant to last.

I have been drunk now for over two weeks,
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks,
But I've got to stop wishin',
Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again.
Just a few friends, just a few friends.

I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
And though I ran away, they'll come back one day.
And still could manage a smile
It just takes awhile, just takes awhile.

Mother, mother ocean, after all these years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupations
just not around.
I feel like I've drowned,
Gonna head uptown.

What a great writer he is, in a class all of his own.

edit: I got it, it's "A pirate looks at 40." Shoot, I guess I'm lookin at 40 too, maybe that's why I'm so depressed, lol. I love that song.

and by the way there is almost NO Jimmy Buffet on youtube so could anyone who has some kindly do the world a favor and put it on there...pretty please?

30. I'm not a big Jimmy Buffet fan but. . .
I love that song too. First heard it from a live male friend and his guitar and could never get the song out of my mind. Eventually got to learn how to play it on the guitar but I sing so bad nobody ever hears me and I have not done it in awhile.

Thanks for reminding me~! Music can cheer me up! and I like to sing!

<<<lol!>>>

As for songs to hear when depressed, how about Cat Stevens' Foreigner Suite? I got that record right when I was leaving my parents house for good without telling them good bye 'cuz I couldn't stand to let them freak out on me or try to stop me. I can never forget how I felt hearing that album and pondering my upcoming freedom. . .

There are no words
I can use
because the meaning
still leaves for you to choose
And I couldn't stand
to let them be abused
by you
you

Dreams I had just last night
made me worried -- white with fright
but I'm over to that Sunny Side Road
Over to that Sunny Side Road

------------------------------------------------------

Won't you give me your word that you won't laugh
Cause you've been a saving grace to me
and I'd hate to face a day
without you around
my life
would be without sound

Love, Love, Love
Love must have made you on a Sunday
Cause you taste to me as good as
God made honey taste
Babe

And the sky all glistens with gold
when you're talking to me
And the whirling wind turns to song
why it sets my soul free

Love, Love, Love
Love must have made you on a Sunday

___________________________________

just a couple excerpts from the song as it does go on and on . . . . and if you think you've heard Cat Stevens but haven't heard this song you've got to get it.

I used to listen to Blood Sweat and Tears real loud when I was depressed. Just loved the voice of David Clayton Thomas but I don't blast my stereo anymore in my old age but I think I could get away with it here now and then.
