3. That was a funny bit, however... |
|
I do think the owner of the toy store is beyond the bounds of an acceptable society by having giant dongs in the windows. I can see mannequins with BDSM outfits and other gear, also I could see putting that thing they show at the end (I rub my Ducky, a rubber ducky in bondage gear) in the window; however dongs, dildos and other big ass weird stuff should be left in the store itself. I think your customers can figure it out...
I say this only because it would be weird to have a kid and walk by the window and see a 2 foot long rubber dong and then try to explain it....
Also as a friend said, it could scare and confuse a child who, if it were a boy, might develop body integrity issues after seeing that. (sees the dong, realizes what it is because he has one too, then freaks out because it is sitting in a window...)

6. Yeah, but community standards are inherently local |
|
In a small town in the square states, even the mild fetish gear in the window would never fly. In the Castro the dongs in the window are acceptable. He knew what the neighborhood was like when he moved in, so he's not really in the right to try to change it when nearly any neighborhood in San Francisco or anyplace else would be more accomodating to his family's needs.
This guy's problem makes about as much sense as buying a house in Chinatown and complaining that nobody speaks English.

8. I understand that, however.. |
|
there is a certain line that has to be drawn. After all a visitor to the city who has no idea what the Castro area is could be in for a serious suprise.
And yes the guy who moved there with his family and acts all suprised is an idiot.

12. A visitor to the city who doesn't know what the Castro is isn't likely to |
|
visit it in the first place. There's no big tourist attraction there, other than the Pride parade and other obviously gay themed events. For that matter, San Francisco had a reputation as pretty much the gayest place in the known universe, so I can't imagine who'd be all that shocked. Maybe my late grandmother, but she was also shocked by violence and sex jokes on television, so she's not a very good standard.

it shouldn't be too hard to explain. Most children are ignorant, not stupid.

7. It's called "coming to the nuisance" in land-use law |
|
This guy knew what he was getting into when he moved into the neighborhood. It's absolutely unfair of him to expect the neighborhood to change to suit his tender sensibilities.

10. That guy reminds me of my ex-boss in San Francisco who was |
|
a raging closet case bible thumper. I swear they could have been twins. I think this dude may be in some denial about why he moved to the Castro in the first place. After all, it IS like moving next to an airport and complaining about the noise.

11. There may be gay couples with children in the neighborhood... |
|
as well, so it's reasonable to tone it down. However, IT'S THE CASTRO, for crying out loud! It was a gay neighborhood when I lived there almost 30 years ago! The guy didn't walk down Castro St. before he bought his house?
One of the reasons I left was because of the increase in Yuppie creeps like him!

13. BTW, shouldn't a guy who lives in a gay ghetto have better hair? |
|
I'm surprised none of the neighbors have called code enforcement about the eyesore on that guy's head. That's got to bring down property values.

16. Ironically the last time I was in the castro I couldn't find a bull whip |
|
and we searched store after store before giving up and settling for a riding crop. I think the neighborhood must already be getting tamer. Also I think I dated one of the customers in the store.

19. being a regular in the castro for many, many years |
|
i can't tell you how much it's changed.
it simply isn't the gayborhood it was -- because sf is so expensive now.
it's a landmark in history -- and important for that.
i believe it will retain some of it's fabulous character -- new gay folk flock there all the time -- they just don't live there -- but it is still our mecca.
and not every neighborhood should set it's standard by what children ought or ought not to see.
