Is there anything that can be done?

Aside from wailing and gnashing my teeth. I already did that.

1. Don't know. You might want to see if it is keeping prefs and whatnot in
a new directory. That has happened in the past. If that is the case, then just copy the bookmarks.html file from your previous directory to the new one. Here is where mine would be found in Linux, not sure about other OSes.

/home/terry/.firefox/default/0vwnflbx.slt/bookmarks.html

2. Do you have backups?
If not probably not. There is a Bookmark Manager on the Bookmarks menu. On its File menu are Export and Import commands.

Next time, Export your bookmarks before doing anything risky. Sorry that doesn't help now. But actually, I've had Firefox lose my bookmarks randomly, so Exporting them from time to time is probably worth doing.

3. Happened to me. Never could find them again. Sometimes I get so mad
at Mozilla I go back to IE. Usually lasts an hour or so. Although I like the IE beta with the tabs. Nice look.

I PMed this to MM, but I'll post it here, as it may help others:

If you accidentally delete your Firefox bookmarks:

Go to:

Start

Run

Type %appdata% and click OK

Click on Mozilla folder

Click on Firefox folder

Click on Profiles folder

Click on next folder (should be some random assortment of letters and numbers and end in .default).

There should be a "Bookmarks HTML" file inside that folder. Send a copy of the "Bookmarks HTML" file to your desktop.

Now start Firefox and import the copy of the Bookmarks file from your desktop.

Your Bookmarks should be restored!

(Your Profile folder is not necessarily deleted when you update to a newer version of Firefox. That is why your themes and extensions are still there after the update, although they may not be compatible with the new version).

I also highly recommend the FEBE extension. Just create a folder (in your My Documents folder or wherever convenient) and this extension will back up your bookmarks, themes, extensions, cookies, passwords, etc.)

6. Lady Eff's exact instructions didn't quite work for me, but I was able to
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 11:31 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
find backups, with dates, of the bookmark files in my user documents. I had not made backups, so the program must have made these automatically.

I copy/pasted to the desktop, and then imported the backup into Firefox's bookmarks.

On edit: I can't remember how I found the exact location of these backups though.

7. OK it was in the following directory (which had to be "unhidden")
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\...

8. That happened to me once, but I had saved them.
I only lost the few I'd bookmarked since the last save. Speaking of which, I need to do that...

9. It's probably your profiles
It happened to me also. Somehow firefox created a new profile which had no ne of my bookmarks. Drove me crazy until on day on start up a profile manager box popped up, i saw there were 2 profiles, I clicked on the other one and wha-laa, there they were.

I forget how I got the profile manager to pop up but you can look here:
