Don't end, summer! NOOOOOOOO!
Doesn't rumor have it that this song mentions a drug bust on good ole Bard, allegedly having something to do with that bastion of propriety, G. Gordon Liddy?
Whatever it is, it's funny as hell.
I remember the thirty-five sweet goodbyes When you put me on the Wolverine Up to Annandale It was still September When your daddy was quite surprised To find you with the working girls In the county jail I was smoking with the boys upstairs When I heard about the whole affair I said oh no William and Mary won't do CHORUS: Well I did not think the girl Could be so cruel And I'm never going back To my old school
Oleanders growing outside her door Soon they're gonna be in bloom Up in Annandale I can't stand her Doing what she did before Living like a gypsy queen In a fairy tale Well I hear the whistle but I can't go I'm gonna take her down to Mexico She said oh no Guadalajara won't do
CHORUS
California tumbles into the sea That'll be the day I go Back to Annandale Tried to warn you About Chino and Daddy Gee But I can't seem to get to you Through the U.S. Mail Well I hear the whistle but I can't go I'm gonna take her down to Mexico She said oh no Guadalajara won't do
CHORUS
Fucking addictive song.

Becker and Fagan at Annandale: check Liddy: not that I've ever heard.
Oh and Dylan referenced Annandale in Subterranean Homesick Blues ("the pump don't work cause the vandals took the handle")

2. Liddy was purportedly the assistant DA at that time. |
|
So it's a vague connection, if one at all.

3. Um, I'm betting it's urban legend. |

Liddy practiced in Manhattan and later was a prosecutor for a bit before running for Congress in the Rochester area IIRC. Neither location puts him in the jurisdiction of Dutchess County (where Annandale-on-Hudson is located.)
I also don't recall hearing that Becker and Fagan themselves were arrested for drugs while at Bard. Maybe they were arrested somewhere else. I knew the sib of one of them years ago and never heard the Liddy connection. It COULD have happened that way -- I don't know for sure.
How on earth do you know about Bard?

4. What do you mean, how do I know about Bard? |
|
Do you mean how do I know the rumors about Bard? Or how do I know that Bard exists? If it's the latter, clearly any good 'Dan fan knows that B and F went to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York....

for your age.:hi: I meant rumors, natch, because any Steely Dan fan would know that Annandale refers to Bard.

Despite the fact that I'll be an upperclassman, and significantly higher up on the ladder for class choices, et cetera, I have absolutely no desire to return to the oppresive Catholic school environment I was released from more than a month ago. When do you go back?
Here's to summer never ending! :toast:
I actually have a pretty amusing story concerning Liddy. It seems that when my dad was a kid (he lived in Poughkeepsie) his parents were both very involved in the New York State GOP (My grandfather is/was a renowned trial lawyer, and my grandmother was the Tax Collecter for the City of Poughkeepsie at the time). He (my dad) overheard a conversation of my grandfather and another man. My grandfather was concerned about the influence of Liddy, who he thought was dangerous to the state party. The other guy said something like, don't worry, we got him a job with CReeP, he won't be around here much longer.
(As for the song, I'll have to pass on the discussion, I'm not a centillionth of a 'Dan freak as you seem to be)
