1. Auschwitz and Birkenau
Even though they are in Poland, you can take a train.

6. I went to Sachsenhausen
A very sobering experience, and it's in Germany.

2. Munich is a beautiful and cosmopolitian city (and very expensive.)
The German version of the Smithsonian Museum (I can't remember the name but it is incredible place-you can't see all of it even if you had days and days) is there along with many fabulous art museums, the Olympic sites, the BWV headquarters and museum (if you're into cars) and the fabulous English Garden: Munich's version of Central Park but more beautiful. The central square with it's ancient clock tower with moving figures is amamzing (15th c.?) Oh yes: Beer. Real beer. Paulaner Weiss Beer! Mmmm! Beer Gardens! The Viktaulenmart (sp?),the huge fresh foods market, is awesome! Great shopping in many districts of the city, from high end couture to Bavarina specialty shops. Wonderful cafes and restaurants. Great alternative music clubs. Wonderful Irish bars with real Irishmen and women! (The most Irish in Europe live in Munich!) The city's close by the King Ludwig's famous castle. I love Munich!

3. from a resident in Germany
see the Black Forest, Munich at Oktoberfest, Nuremberg etc, these are tourist destinations. I would also recommend a visit to Switzerland (Zurich) and Austria (Salzberg). My absolute favorite vacation in Germany however was on an island in the North Sea called Wangerooge. This is the last of a whole chain of little islands and this one is absolutely charming and undiscovered by outsiders (but overrun by Germans in the summer of course). If you like the sea, this is a great place.

4. Where will you be staying?
Berlin, Potsdam, Dresden, the Black Forrest, Hamburg, Bremen, Rügen .... there is so much to see in Germany and then there are all those other beautiful European countries.
