Why do they call strippers "Exotic dancers"?
The dance on a stage naked. Whats exotic about that? Why not just call them exhibitionists? Or flashers? Or Nekid dancers?
Seems to me they are anything but "exotic".

1. The nakedness isn't the exotic part, you goofball!
The dancing is the exotic part. Where else can you see that kind of rhythmic gyration or brass pole clasped in an inverted thigh-embrace?

2. Why? Because "Naked women rolling around on a filthy bar room
floor, desperately trying to get you to shove dollar bills into their buttcrack" just doesn't have the same cache to it.

3. The same reason they call janitors "maintenance engineers"
Put a better spin on the job title.

I had to laugh when they called the bar Eminem got arrested in last week a "nightclub". The sign probably calls it a "gentleman's club", but we all call Cheetah's a titty bar.

There are no gentleman in a "gentleman's club" except when the police are raiding it.

what you're talking about.
Thanks for the stereotype and the demeaning of my chosen profession of 12 years. You have no idea.

11. All of the above.
For easy reference, although I do prefer exotic dancer, stripper means someone that strips out of his/her clothes. This can be done in a very artistic fashion. Just as in any profession, there are competent people and dumbasses.
There is so much more to this business than that, it would take me all week to explain, and many all year to understand. I don't really have time to enlighten such judgemental people, so I'm not going to bother, seeing as how you all have already made up your minds.
One thing you should know,though...it really is a mindfuck, not a literal one. If you can recognize that, then you are at a good starting point.

12. my ex-girlfriend years ago was a stripper/dancer/etc.,
after she lost her job in the medical profession...6 months later she was busted driving with a bag of cocaine...

I also have know of somebody, wouldn't say friend, who frequents a bar I go to. He is a walking menu of STD's...

Of course, this is in the Dallas metroplex, very shady part of town where these places are able to operate. I find the whole experience demeaning to women myself.

13. I have never
AND I MEAN NEVER touched coke in the 12 years I've been dancing.
It's only demeaning if you want it to be, or if you are too stupid to understand what's going on.
It's actually quite the reverse...we are taking advantage of the customer.

9. Because "erotic dancers" would be too obvious
"Exotic" sounds enough like "erotic" to be a good code-word for it, I guess.

24. Been to many
strip clubs whatever you care to call them. I have taken dates to strip clubs, never had a bad time. People get the stereotype that its a full out or g but its not, the bouncers say so. The closet you get to touching one of these ladies is tipping her. I like a woman that has the intestinal fortitude to not give a rats arse about what people think of her.

25. Here In Canada
We never use the "exotic dancer" euphimism (sp?). We just refer to them as "peeler joints". I only ever went to one. This dancer (peeler) started to shake his wang in my face (did i happen to mention that i was gay?) I left immediately. He was hustling me for a table dance and a date. No thanks! Was my boyfriend ever pissed off!

32. Goes back to the days of "Little Egypt", Carmen Miranda and the like
Not all these women were simply strippers and several were of foreign descent. Exotic dancers also embodies belly dancers who are both erotic and exotic. Even in newer strip clubs, the best dancers are usually a bit acrobatic with their routines and don't just strip.

That's why.
