Because just about everything that can go wrong has gone wrong lately, I've been squirreled away dealing with all that stuff instead of screwing around here on the DU like I like.

But I don't want to get into all that. Instead, I'll make a humble request for well wishes/good thoughts/positive vibes/prayers/encouragement/mojo--whatever you've got in ya--because I just applied for a promotion that would be extremely helpful when it comes to extracting myself from all the bad stuff that's been going on lately.

(Whoever said money doesn't buy happiness has never been broke as fuck.)

Anyway, besides the bump in pay it would also be a good career move in that I actually would be able to use my degree for once and use it for something I care about.

So, if you can send some of your goodness my way I'd really, really, really appreciate it.

16. I am a Journalism major....

and happily I have been able to use it all along. At one time, I worked on a couple feature sections for the Chicago Tribune, then did public relations (more $$$). Now I work in a corporate communications environment, and one of my coworkers has a Communications degree.

23. Neat--When I was growing up

the only paper allowed in the house was the Trib. The Tempo Comics section helped me learn to read, so..uh..hooray. :)

At my old job I was told I was hired to do communications/PR work but it turned out that my boss thought that meant "be a secretary and take my dictation." At least I'm not still there--what a nightmare that was. I've noticed that so far in this town the employers want to either hire people with lots of experience or people who need more as unpaid interns. Maybe that's just my bad luck and not necessarily how it is, but it's been an unpleasant pattern nonetheless. I'm not standing at a bus stop in January in a suit to go be an unpaid PR intern in this town, that's for sure.

I know that the Tribune is repuke, but many of the reporters there are not.

29. I've been in Milwaukee most of my life

but one of my parents is from Chicago so that's where the Tribune rule came from. It was born of homesickness and that, GOP friendly or not, the Tribune had better writing than the local papers. Plus my parents schooled us on all things Dem when they read the Opinion page and yelled at it. I hate to admit that even as an adult I rarely made it past Tempo. I haven't read it in ages, but they had/have a TV critic there who I loved to read. Steve Johnson, is his name, I think. I'd read that section first to start off with good news, and then after reading that guy's take on pop culture/TV...well I just didn't want to ruin a good mood.

The paper version, since the thought of newsprint in my hands is important.

And make my own judgments based on what I read. Hell, they get hammered for running Molly Ivins most Thursdays.
