Who's got satellite broadband? |
|
And what are your experiences with it?
The Internet is getting to be too large for dialup so we're going to bite the bullet and invest in broadband. We live beyond DSL and cable so I think our only option is satellite.

1. I have wildblue satalite internet. |
|
I have a download speed of 1.5mbps download and upload at 256kbps. I have been satisfied so far, it is expensive though (I pay 85 a month). They have cheaper plans available. I am well out of range for any broadband service, the only way was by satalite or suffer with my 15-20kbps connection. http://www.wildblue.net/http://www.wildblue.cc/wbforums/index.php

Wildblue is telling me that they're not doing any installations in the area. The only company doing anything at all in our area is Hughesnet and their installaiton is really expensive. Guess we'll have to bite the bullet.

3. I have Hughes satellite |

Download speeds are as advertised, upload speeds (due to the lack of, I'm told, technology) are below average for what you pay for.
WildBlue is comparable to Hughes in terms of quality of service - this has been told to me by a friend who installs for both companies, and who also tweaked my Hughes set-up for me after another installer had done an "average" job of it.
The installation fees for both are a bit steep, and my monthly charge is $60 a month. If you want to upgrade to faster business service (which we will get when we move) you'll need a whole different dish (and ANOTHER install fee of between $750 or so), and I think that monthly charge is $100+.
(note: Since we run a business out of the home, it makes sense for us to go the business route. It probably isn't necessary for average home use.)

5. You ought to check wildblue DancingBear. |
|
I am getting 1.5mbps down and 256kbps up with their "proplan". The monthly charge is 79.95 and the install was 300.00 total. It is a better deal than the 1mbps download from hughes for which they charge 100 a month.

6. I have been hearing about Internet over powerlines. |

They are trying it in a couple of areas. They are getting 10mbps speeds with the technology. I can't wait!
