This will date you: do you know what a "wind wing" is?
I saw a wind wing on a television program tonight, and wondered how many people would be old enough to know what that is.

1. I think I know.......
Isn't that the part of the car.......in the front doors....a small window that opens to let the air flow across the driver?

They were triangular in shape....

2. That's it - cars don't have them anymore.
In fact, I can't remember the last year they did. But, that was the only way to get any cool(ish) air into a car before air conditioning became standard.

4. Hey! How do I make italics?
That's a cool way of adding emphasis without resorting to capitals. (I've been posting on various internet media for 11 year now, and still can't keep up with all the protocols and nicities. For instance, I don't know what *this* means, i.e., when you put a word between asterisks, even though I've seen it for years).

6. Italics are easy......
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:47 AM by CaliforniaPeggy
you need to first strike the < key. Then the letter i...then the > key.

Then, to stop the italics, use the slash / inside the brackets in front of the letter i.

The same procedure will get you the bold. Except that here you use the letter b instead of the letter 1...

All this is shown in the HTML lookup table...

And more besides!

Have fun!

8. Was babysitting a 9-month old back in the '70s
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:58 AM by Whoa_Nelly
Had a VW bug. I put the baby in his carseat, and to buckle him in, needed both hands. So, I tossed my keys into the driver's seat, buckled him in, and then locked the door so he'd be safe.

OOPS! Now, the baby was locked in with my keys!

I was pretty upset and frantic. It was summertime, and the baby was already starting to howl.

I ran to the house next to the one where I had been 'sitting. Luckily, the guy who answered was a fireman.

He came out with a screwdriver, popped the wind wing and opened the door for me.

If this scenario had happened in recent years, I think things would have been very different, and the outcome would have taken a lot longer!

wnat to add:
To this day, because of that incident, I carry an extra set of keys with me at all times. The downside is, I have at least once locked my keys and my purse with the extra set in them in my car...Damn! Can't win for losing sometimes :eyes:

7. we always called them "wing windows"
as in "open your wing"

I loved those things. The original "solar air conditioner."

9. My truck's got 'em

The OEM parts houses call 'em "vent windows," though.

Tell ya one thing — they're great for smokers, especially in winter and when it's raining. They also make great air deflectors when you're boppin' along at speed with the window down.

But, like Whoa Nelly said, they also make a car pathetically easy to break into. x(

14. What my truck slaesman father told me when they were being phased out
My Dad sold new trucks from about 79-89... about the time the wind-wings ("vents" as we called them in TX) were being phase out. When he drove home his first demo w/o vents, I asked him about it and he told me it was a cost-cutting procedure on the part of the automakers.

Each vent added $500 to the vehicle's total cost (two vents per car= an additional $1,000). Anyway, that's what he told me back in the day.
